Olivia is a 34-year-old mother of four from Uganda. She lives with her husband and children, and the family depends mainly on small-scale farming for their livelihood. Their income is very limited and often insufficient to meet the family’s basic needs. Her husband supplements farming with casual labor whenever work is available in order to support the family and contribute towards the children’s education.
About three years ago, Olivia developed a mass on her left lower limb, which has over time increased in size and become increasingly painful. She has also experienced episodes of bleeding from the mass. Her ability to move has become severely restricted - she can no longer walk independently and currently depends on a wheelchair and the assistance of her attendants to move around and perform some of her daily activities.
Olivia sought medical assistance from Rushoroza Hospital, where upon review, doctors recommended an amputation of her lower limb to prevent the symptoms from getting worse.
Fortunately, our medical partner African Mission Healthcare (AMH) can help. Olivia is scheduled to undergo the operation on September 2nd, and AMH is requesting $255 to fund Olivia’s surgery. Once completed, this procedure will hopefully allow her to live more comfortably. After recovering, Olivia is most looking forward to beginning a new chapter of her life with less pain, improved mobility, and greater independence.
Olivia shared, “For the past three years, I have lived with constant pain and a condition that has taken away my ability to walk and work as I used to. I am now hopeful that I can receive the surgery recommended by the doctors and finally have a chance to live without this terrible pain. I know losing my leg will not be easy, but I would rather have a chance to live and care for my children than continue suffering like this. I humbly request donors to make it possible for me to receive the surgery I need. Your support would give me hope for a better life, and a future for my children.”
