Mao is a 17-year-old farmer - and the youngest of five children - living in Takeo province. Except for one sister who works in a nearby clothing factory, the family cultivates rainy day rice. Mao left school so that he could help his family with the farm work, and he is now learning how to cook, so that he can prepare meals for his family to share. During a Cambodian holiday last year, Mao fell off his motorbike while navigating a rugged road. He fractured his distal radius and several of his fingers. His parents took him to a local clinic, where he had surgery, and metal pins inserted to allow proper healing. He still has pain and weakness in his hand. In order to assess the progress of his fractures, surgeons need to remove the hardware from his fingers and wrist. Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, can help. On January 8th, Mao will undergo hardware removal surgery at Kien Khleang National Rehabilitation Centre, which will cost $304. This procedure will help him to strengthen his wrist and fingers, enabling Mao to work with his parents in the rice paddies, and reduce his risk of infection. Mao and his family need your help to fund this surgery. Mao said: "I hope that I will have full movement of my hand, and that I will not have any pain or infection."

Dan is a 36 year-old-factory worker who lives in Prey Veng province with his wife and 5-year-old son. His wife works as a mango farmer and Dan has been working in a nearby food factory for several years. In his free time, he likes playing soccer with his friends, or with his son. In 2021, Dan was driving at night and was in a motorbike accident that caused a fracture in his right femur. He went to a local clinic and doctors fixated hardware to heal the fracture. Now, the fracture has healed but the hardware is uncomfortable and it is difficult for him to walk and run. He is also at risk of further infection. Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, can help. On January 11th, Dan will undergo a hardware removal procedure, which will cost $304. This procedure will eliminate pain and help him walk easily again. He shared, "I am hoping I can have surgery so the pain will go away and I can run around with my son."

Elizabeth, who is seven months old, lives with her parents and two older brothers in a small house in Haiti, that they share with other relatives. Both of her parents are farmers. Elizabeth has a cardiac condition called atrioventricular septal defect. A large hole exists in the center of her heart, which affects all four of the heart's chambers. Blood leaks through this hole without passing through her lungs to obtain oxygen, leaving Elizabeth weak and unable to gain weight. Elizabeth will fly to the Dominican Republic to receive treatment. As she is too small and weak to undergo major surgery to completely correct her condition, on April 9th she will have a procedure, during which the doctors at Hospital CEDIMAT will implant a shunt, that will allow oxygenated blood to circulate through her body. This will stabilize Elizabeth's condition so that she can continue to grow and gain weight until she can more safely undergo a complete repair in several years. While another organization is contributing money to pay for Elizabeth's surgery, our medical partner, International Cardiac Alliance, is seeking your help to fund the $1,500 needed to cover the costs of Elizabeth's pre and post-operative care and for the documents and travel costs for Elizabeth, her family, and the social workers that will accompany the family.
