Ntajiri is a six-month-old baby boy from Kenya. He is the youngest of three children, with siblings aged 13 and 8. Ntajiri’s mother is their sole provider, and relies on charcoal making to support the family.
Ntajiri’s mother shared that she gave birth to him at home assisted by a neighbor, and at birth, it took about an hour before his first cry. Ntajiri has otherwise been healthy until last month, when his head started increasing in size. His mother took him to a nearby hospital, and they were referred to our our medical partner’s care center, BethanyKids Kijabe Hospital (BKKH).
Ntajiri has been diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a condition in which excess cerebrospinal fluid accumulates in the brain and increases intracranial pressure. As a result, he has been experiencing an increasing head circumference and if left untreated, he will experience severe physical and developmental delays. Ntajiri requires a shunt insertion surgery, but his mother is unable to raise the required funding for the procedure.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is helping Ntajiri receive treatment. On January 19th, he will undergo a shunt insertion procedure to drain the excess fluid from his brain. With proper treatment, Ntajiri will hopefully develop into a strong, healthy young boy. Now, Ntajiri’s family needs help to fund this $719 procedure.
Ntajiri’s mother says, “He keeps crying, and he is not feeding well.”
