Adam is an 81-year-old farmer from Malawi. Over the years, he has built a large family—he is married to three wives and is a father to 14 children, all of whom are now married and living independently. Adam’s spouses reside in separate villages and help Adam as they can, but he primarily depends on himself for day-to-day needs. Adam has sustained himself through small-scale farming - growing maize and groundnuts for food and income. Farming has been his way of life for decades, but it has become more difficult to manage with age, as physical labor that once came easily has become increasingly demanding, and his strength has gradually declined.
Six months ago, Adam started experiencing frequent urination, and he now receives temporary interventions through catheterization and regular catheter changes. He was visiting another clinic, but the surgical treatment he needed had been continuously postponed. Eventually, Adam was referred to our medical partner’s hospital for further management. He was diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia and needs to undergo a prostatectomy.
Currently, Adam’s ability to work has declined due to his condition, and he relies on small contributions from family members to meet his needs. His greatest wish is to regain his health and independence, and he hopes to recover enough to return to tending his land, even on a small scale, and to take care of himself without being a burden to his family. To heal, Adam needs timely access to surgical treatment and support to get through this challenging period.
Fortunately, Adam is scheduled to undergo surgery at our medical partner’s hospital on April 17th. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $530 to fund this surgery. Once completed, this procedure will improve Adam’s quality of life.
Adam said, “All I hope for is to get the treatment I need so I can live without pain and in peace again so I can return to farming in order to take care of myself and my family.”
