Srey Rout is a 23-year-old factory worker from Cambodia. She lives with her parents, two siblings, and grandmother. She is the oldest among her siblings, who are both still in school. Her mother works in a factory and her father is a rice farmer. Currently, Srey Rout works alongside her mother to support the family. When she is not working, Srey Rout helps to care for her 80-year-old grandmother. Srey Rout was born with bilateral cleft lip and cleft palate, a condition affecting the development of her facial and dental structures. Since infancy, she has undergone several surgeries to address the gap on both sides of her upper lip and the opening in the roof of her mouth. These conditions have made it challenging for her to speak clearly and have resulted in dental and facial asymmetry, including missing or misaligned malformed teeth. She has recently experienced complications from previous surgeries. Surgeons need to remove unhealthy bone and create a flap to cover the exposed bone. This will involve delicate localized adjustments in her bone structure. When Srey Rout learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), she traveled for two hours seeking treatment. On July 2nd, surgeons at CSC will perform a remodeling of the maxillary bone with a mucosal flap to cover exposed bone, and the removal of previous plate and screws to improve her overall facial symmetry, correct skeletal misalignment, and enhance her dental function and appearance. Srey Rout's family is able to contribute $100 towards her medical costs but needs help raising the remaining $573 to fund the procedure. Srey Rout said: "I have had many operations and hope that soon I can chew food and be able to smile."

Sancia is an 11-year-old girl and the oldest of two siblings from Kenya. They live with their mother who takes on casual jobs like washing clothes to support her family. Sancia has been suffering from reduced hearing since she was three years old. This has led to delayed milestones in her life, such as difficulties with speech because she can hardly hear sounds around her. Her mother has undertaken numerous journeys to various hospitals looking for a cure, but these efforts have not been successful. Now in the 5th grade, Sancia is having a harder time academically due to her hearing issues. Her speech is distorted, making clear communication difficult. Sancia was referred to our medical partner's care center, AIC Kijabe Hospital, where doctors recommended fitting bilateral hearing aids to improve her hearing and potentially improve her speech difficulties. Sancia will be fitted with hearing aids on September 6th and our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, needs help to raise $748. Sancia’s mother says, “Sometimes I ask her to bring me something and she brings a completely different item. She is not doing well in school, and I am afraid she is missing out on her childhood. I hope you can help her regain her hearing so she can enjoy her childhood."

Mouykeang is a four-year-old child from Kandal province in Cambodia, near the border with Vietnam. She is an only child and lives with her parents and grandparents. Mouykeang's father works as a truck driver, while her mother is a homemaker. Her grandparents stay at home as well, raising frogs in a pond behind the house. Mouykeang is currently in kindergarten and enjoys English class. She enjoys watching cartoons and loves eating rice with a fried egg on top. Mouykeang and her father came to Children's Surgical Centre to seek treatment for a bone condition affecting her left leg. She had received surgery at another hospital in December 2023 to treat an infection, and a second surgery in February this year when the infection recurred. Because her condition has been difficult to manage, Mouykeang was sent to our medical partner's care centre, Children’s Surgical Centre, for further care. There, she was found to have a leg bone that didn't heal properly after a fracture, along with an infection in that area. On August 14th, Mouykeang will undergo surgery on her left shinbone, and surgeons will also affix an external frame to help support her recovery. Mouykeang and her family are able to contribute $100 towards the cost of her treatment and need help raising $369 more to fund the procedure. Mouykeang's father says, "I hope she will be able to walk comfortably and grow up happy and free of pain."
