Leonel is a two-month-old baby who lives with his parents and two older siblings in southern Bolivia. His father is a chef and his mother used to work in a small ice cream shop, but is now at home taking care of the children.
Shortly after Leonel was born, his mother noticed that his heart was beating faster than normal. She quickly brought him to a cardiologist who diagnosed him with two cardiac conditions: atrial septal defect and ventricular septal defect. This means that there is a hole in his heart between the two upper chambers, and another hole between the two lower chambers. As a result of these conditions, blood cannot circulate normally through Leonel’s heart and body, leaving him weak and short of breath.
On October 28th, he will undergo cardiac surgery at our medical partner’s care center, Hospital del Niño Dr. Ovidio Aliaga Uría. During surgery, doctors will sew the two holes shut so that blood can no longer leak through them.
Leonel’s family needs help to fund the costs of cardiac care and surgery. Our medical partner, International Cardiac Alliance, requests $1,500 to cover the cost of cardiac exams and diagnostics, surgical costs, follow-up care, and medications.
Leonel’s mother said, “I’m glad we arrived safely at the hospital. I trust everything will be fine and he will be a healthy boy.”
