Biira is a 33-year-old nursery school teacher who lives with her husband in Uganda. They have been married for eight years and live off of the salary she makes from teaching. Her favorite food is Irish potatoes and she is very devoted to prayer.
“Four years ago, Biira started feeling abdominal pain,” shares our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF). “She went to the hospital several times but was never given a clear diagnosis.” After she started experiencing heavy bleeding, she visited a clinic and was finally diagnosed with uterine fibroids.
Uterine fibroids are growths that form in the uterus which cause abdominal pain, swelling, and recurring bleeding. In addition to these symptoms, AMHF adds that Biira “gets tired quickly and doesn’t perform to her capacity at work; sometimes she misses work.”
“Three months ago, she went back to the hospital for surgery, but when she was told how much the surgery would cost, Biira decided to go back home and live with the pain because she couldn’t afford treatment,” shares AMHF.
Treatment for Biira’s uterine fibroids requires a total abdominal hysterectomy to remove her uterus. If not treated, Biira will face the risks of severe anemia and possibly death.
For $250, doctors will be able to perform this surgery on Biira to stop her bleeding and pain, improve her quality of life, and let her get back to teaching.
“Thank you very much to you all for the support,” Biira shares. “God bless you abundantly.”
