About three years ago, Tusiime went to the hospital to address “a long-standing history of umbilical swelling that has been increasing in size associated with abdominal pain,” our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF) tells us. She was diagnosed with an umbilical hernia—a condition in which part of the intestine protrudes through the umbilical opening in the abdominal wall.
Doctors advised Tusiime to have surgery, and recommended the same after she delivered her first child. However, she could not afford the treatment. “If not treated, Tusiime is at risk of suffering intestinal blockage, incarceration and/or strangulation,” says AMHF.
In addition, her pain renders her “unable to lift a hoe to dig and she cannot carry heavy stuff,” AMHF says. Two of her children have dropped out of school due to lack of funds for school fees, and Tusiime’s inability to farm worsens the situation.
$220 will cover the cost of surgery to return the herniated tissue to the abdominal cavity and stitch the opening in the abdominal wall closed. The surgery will eliminate Tusiime’s blockage and strangulation risks and enable her to return to farming so she can provide for her family.
Tusiime says, “I want to have surgery so that I get relieved of the pain and have a flat belly without swelling. Thank you for thinking about the poor.”

After one unexpected treatment delay, Tusiime has received successful hernia repair surgery and is recovering well.
In early March, we heard from our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF) that “because of big size of the umbilical hernia that Tusiime has, it has been a bit difficult to find the right size of mesh implants that is needed for the surgery. The hospital is still looking into getting the mesh implant and as soon as that is available, Tusiime’s surgery will be rescheduled.”
On May 4, 2016, AMHF reported: “Tusiime’s hernia repair was a success. There is no more risk of intestinal blockage, incarceration and/or strangulation. Tusiime will also be free from the pain. After recovery, she will be able to work in her fields and provide for her family. Tusiime will also be able to put on a skirt or dress without having to wrap another piece of cloth around her waist to cover the hernia. She was discharged on 23rd April 2016.”
“I am feeling happy, well, light, and new,” Tusiime said after surgery. “It’s hard to believe the hernia was treated. I am sure my friends will not recognize me when they meet me without the big thing on my belly. I am excited because I will be able to put on nice clothes. Above all, I will have no pain and after recovery, I will be able to do my work at home well and without feeling pain. Thank you so much Watsi for the miracle you have done for me. Thank you to everyone who has contributed money, talent, and care towards my treatment. I am also grateful to the people who provided a mesh for my surgery. God bless everyone!”
