Sim is a 76-year-old widow from Kampong Cham, Cambodia. She previously worked as a rice farmer and is now retired. She has four sons, four daughters, and twenty-two grandchildren. She lives alone in a house near her youngest daughter, who works in a garment factory. Her children provide support when needed. In her free time, Sim enjoys listening to the radio and listening to monks' prayers. Three years ago, Sim developed a cataract in her left eye, causing her itchiness, tearing, and blurry vision. A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye, so it is like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so she is not able to go places on her own. When Sim learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for three hours seeking treatment. On July 8th, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her left eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $263 procedure. Sim shared, "I hope that after cataract surgery, my vision will improve so that I can recognize her relatives easily, go outside and travel to more distant places independently, and no longer worry about my eyesight."

Lydia is a 75-year-old woman from the Philippines. She enjoys preparing healthy, nutritious meals as a way to sustain a longer and healthier life for herself. She also enjoys watching television to relax. Above all, she remains grateful for the support of her children and does her best to manage her needs while being mindful of their own responsibilities. A year ago, Lydia began to experience troubling symptoms, including shortness of breath, general weakness, and difficulty swallowing. She was diagnosed with multinodular non-toxic goiter and needs surgery to prevent her symptoms from getting worse. Fortunately, our medical partner, World Surgical Foundation Philippines (WSFP), is helping Lydia receive treatment. On September 26th, she will undergo a thyroidectomy, during which surgeons will remove all or part of her thyroid gland. A portion of the cost of her treatment is being supported by the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, and WSFP is raising the remaining $935 to cover the cost of Lydia's procedure and care. Lydia said, "I am very grateful for the opportunity to receive free surgery. I hope to recover so I can move more comfortably, care for myself better, and lessen the burden on my children."

Lightness is a newborn baby girl from Tanzania. She is the only child in her family. Her mother runs a small business. Lightness was born with bilateral clubfoot. Both of her feet are turned inward. Without treatment, this condition could make it difficult for Lightness to move, wear shoes, and walk comfortably as she grows. Lightness has been scheduled to begin a series of gentle manipulations and casting procedures to guide her feet into a more natural position gradually. Once the casting phase is complete, she will undergo a tenotomy procedure to further correct her foot position. Surgeons at our medical partner's care center, Kafika House, will begin clubfoot treatment for Lightness on September 18th. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $341 to fund Lightness's clubfoot repair. After treatment, Lightness will have the opportunity to grow with properly positioned feet and, in the future, to wear normal shoes and to walk comfortably like other children. “We are grateful to have found a place where our daughter can receive treatment. We hope she will grow up walking comfortably and wearing shoes,” said Lightness's mother.
