This is nine-year-old Walter from Guatemala. He’s under the care of our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq’ (WK). WK operates out of central Guatemala and is able to provide comprehensive care to Kaqchikel-speaking families like Walter’s.
Walter has been having multiple seizures on a daily basis since the age of two. “As a result, he is very developmentally delayed - he can’t walk or talk,” WK tells us. “He spends most of his time sleepy and lethargic from successive seizures and he doesn’t really have time to recover from one seizure before he has another.”
“Walter’s mom is very diligent in caring for her child, and she’s brought him to see us because she’s heard from other patients and families of the great things that we’ve been able to do for other children with similar conditions,” WK continues.
And with $745, we can ensure that the efforts of Walter’s mother, family and the WK team come to fruition. “We will perform extensive evaluation, including mapping of the seizures electrically and imaging of the brain to help best define the optimal treatment,” WK writes. “With this in hand, we are confident that we will be able to get Walter’s seizures under control so that his brain can start to develop and he can begin to gain some life skills and develop motor skills.”
We’re halfway to a better prognosis for Walter in the long run. Let’s help this effort come full circle by funding his care.
