Steven is a four-year-old boy from Tanzania. He lives with his single mother, as his father passed away while Steven’s mother was still pregnant, leaving her to raise her children alone. His mother is a small-scale farmer who grows crops mainly for family consumption and sells small amounts to earn income. Steven is an energetic child who loves playing football and interacting with other children in his community. However, his limited mobility has prevented him from starting school, as he cannot walk the long distances required.
For the last three years, Steven has experienced complications due to severe burn-related injuries affecting his right big toe, and he has also lost toes on his left foot. These conditions make it difficult for him to stand and walk for long distances, and his doctors recommend an amputation of their left toe and release with graft of his right big toe to prevent their symptoms from getting worse.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $1,088 to fund Steven’s surgery. Once completed, this procedure will hopefully help improve his health and quality of life. After recovering, Steven is looking forward to regaining better mobility, attending school, and enjoying a more active childhood.
Steven’s mother says, “He cannot step and balance well because of his foot condition, and walking long distances is not possible for him.”
