Racheal is a one-year-old infant from Kenya. Her mother is a food vendor, and her father works as a motorbike rider. She has two older siblings, who are three years old and five years old.
Racheal was born with spina bifida, a condition in which the spine does not form properly. As she was born at a clinic, her family was referred to a larger health center for further care, but could not immediately arrange transportation. At three weeks of age, Racheal’s head began to enlarge. This occurs as a complication of spina bifida when fluid accumulates in the brain.
At one month old, Racheal was able to undergo surgery to repair her spine, and a shunt was inserted to help drain the excess fluid. The shunt malfunctioned in December 2025, but doctors were able to manage the malfunction and her recovery continued. During a clinic visit in February 2026 however, it was discovered that Racheal’s head was enlarging and her eyesight was deteriorating. She now requires another surgery, which her parent’s health insurance does not cover. Thankfully, Racheal was referred to our medical partner’s care center.
Racheal has been diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a condition in which excess cerebrospinal fluid accumulates in the brain and increases intracranial pressure. As a result of her condition, Racheal has been experiencing an increasing head circumference. Without treatment, Racheal will experience severe physical and developmental delays.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $719 to cover the cost of surgery for Racheal that will treat her hydrocephalus. The procedure is scheduled to take place on February 6th and will drain the excess fluid from Racheal’s brain. This will reduce intracranial pressure and greatly improve her quality of life. With proper treatment, Racheal will hopefully develop into a strong, healthy young girl.
Racheal’s mother says, “Her head is very heavy, which has made it difficult for her to develop and sit on her own.”
