Mary Ann is a mother of two from Philippines. Her husband is a taxi driver and and occasionally takes on construction work during holidays or when work is unavailable. Maryann stopped working after giving birth to her youngest child; she previously worked as an online seller. At present, Maryann spends her time caring for her children and using her mobile phone for leisure.
In 2023, Mary Ann felt a lump in her breast and underwent an ultrasound examination. The result was reviewed by a physician who informed her that the mass was benign and advised her to return for a follow-up consultation. However, she did not return for follow-up as she felt reassured by the initial findings.
In 2024, Mary Ann consulted with another physician, who recommended surgical intervention. Upon learning the cost of the procedure, she decided not to proceed due to financial constraints. She opted to take herbal medication for one month, thinking that the condition would resolve on its own. However, she developed an infection from a wound in her breast, and had to seek treatment.
Mary Ann was diagnosed with breast cancer. Without treatment, the cancer may spread to other organs. In August 2025, she started chemotherapy and was advised to undergo a mastectomy, surgery to remove breast tissue. This treatment aims to rid her body of breast cancer and to prevent the cancer from metastasizing.
Fortunately, our medical partner, World Surgical Foundation Philippines (WSFP), is helping Mary Ann receive treatment. She is scheduled to undergo a mastectomy on December 19th at Our Lady of Peace Hospital. A portion of the cost of her treatment is being supported by the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, and WSFP is raising $990 to cover the remaining cost. After treatment, Mary Ann will hopefully return to a cancer-free life.
Mary Ann shared, “Thank you to everyone who is helping us in these difficult times. Any assistance that you give brings relief to me and my family.”
