Debelo is 65-year-old farmer from Ethiopia, who has spent most of his life working on his land alongside his wife, to raise their six children. Debelo has always taken pride in providing for his family through hard physical work. Over the last year, however, a health problem has worn down his strength and independence. About a year ago, Debelo started experiencing an urgent and frequent need to pass urine, but difficulty in passing urine. The symptoms were especially worse at night. This has made his daily work exhausting, turning a job he used to care about into a daily struggle. The illness has affected other parts of his life as well, including social and community engagement. Debelo has been with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), an enlargement of the prostate gland. Physicians at Saglan Wajee General Hospital determined that he should undergo surgery treatment. Our medical partner, Saglan Wajee General Hospital, is requesting $900 to fund the procedure, which is scheduled to take place on August 23rd. This procedure will significantly improve Debelo's quality of life. Debelo said, "I just need to be healthy again. It has been a whole year of dealing with pain when I try to pass urine, and when I try to do anything. I just wish to be able to work and take care of my family financially, again."

Julius is a 63-year-old husband, father, and grandfather from Uganda. He and his wife have together raised eight children, all of whom are now adults with families of their own. Throughout their marriage, the couple has worked hard to provide for their family despite limited resources. Julius is a small-scale farmer who grows crops that help feed the family, and generate a modest income. His wife serves as a church leader, and dedicates much of her time to supporting the community. Twelve years ago, Julius began to experience troubling symptoms, including persistent pain on one side of his body, severe pain in his chest and lower abdomen. He has lost his appetite, suffers from recurrent fevers, and has become so weak that even bending to perform simple daily activities is difficult. The worsening symptoms have greatly affected his ability to work on his farm, threatening the family's primary source of income. Julius sought medical attention at Rwibaale Hospital and was diagnosed with an enlarged spleen. Physicians recommend a laparotomy, which is a surgery that opens up the abdominal cavity to treat his condition. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $230 to fund Julius's surgery. On September 1st, he will undergo surgery at Rwibaale Health Center. Once completed, this procedure will hopefully greatly improve his quality of life. Julius says: "I hope to find relief from the pain, so I can resume my duties as a farmer, and take good care of my children."

Samalani is a 40-year-old driver from Malawi. He is married with three children and works hard to provide for his family, although his health has recently hampered his efforts. In early 2024, Samalani was diagnosed with a right inguinal hernia, a condition that occurs when abdominal tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the lower abdominal muscles, causing a bulge in the groin area. Over time, the swelling has become more frequent and is now associated with pain around the affected area. With proper treatment, Samalani hopes to regain his productivity and continue fulfilling his role as a responsible father and provider for his family. Fortunately, on April 9th, he will undergo hernia repair surgery with the help of our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare. Samalani is able to contribute to his treatment, but needs $575 more to fund the procedure. He says, "Surgery will provide me the opportunity for a healthier life. Your support will help me to continue taking good care of my family."
