Each year around the world, millions of people living in poverty die of curable diseases because they do not get health care in time. Muso was founded by a group of Malian and American healthcare providers with a shared belief: that no one should die waiting for health care. Muso builds health care systems that save lives by reaching patients fast. Care without fees, from professional Community Health Workers and upgraded primary care clinics, overcomes financial, geographic, and gender-based barriers to care. The communities Muso serves have achieved the largest and fastest improvements in child survival on record. Today, Muso serves over half a million patients directly, and supports national health care reform across Mali, Côte d’Ivoire, and Zambia.

Marietou is a young woman from Mali. She is a stay-at-home mother who cares for her two-year-old daughter. During her free time, she enjoys being with her family. Marietou is pregnant, and her doctors recommend that she deliver via a caesarean section because of a high-risk pregnancy. This way, doctors can ensure the safety of both mother and child. Our medical partner, Muso, is helping Marietou undergo a C-Section on April 28th. This procedure will cost $259, and Marietou needs your support. Marietou shared, "With your support, I hope my baby will be healthy."

Mahamadou is a four-year-old boy from Mali. For the past year, Mahamadou has been experiencing an inguino-scrotal hernia, a condition where abdominal tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal wall and extends down into the scrotal sac. He also has a hydrocele. These conditions have been causing him swelling and much discomfort. Fortunately, on April 23rd, Mahamadou will undergo hernia repair surgery at our medical partner's care center. Our medical partner, Muso, is requesting $611 to fund Mahamadou's surgery. Once completed, this procedure will hopefully allow him to live a healthier life. Mahamadou's parents shared, "We hope that this treatment will make the swelling and discomfort disappear."

Baba is a four-year-old boy from Mali. A few weeks ago, Baba began to experience troubling symptoms, including intense abdominal pain and high fever, prompting his parents to seek consultation at the nearest health center. After a complete clinical examination aided by additional tests, Baba was diagnosed with peritonitis due to gastric perforation, a life-threatening inflammation of the lining of the abdomen. Physicians recommend surgery to treat his condition. Our medical partner, Muso, is requesting $674 to fund Baba's surgery. On April 22nd, He will undergo surgery at our medical partner's care center, Hôpital du Mali. Once completed, this procedure will hopefully greatly improve his quality of life. Baba's mother shared, "I hope that my son will be better after surgery."

Bintou is a three-year-old girl from Mali. She is the youngest of five children. Bintou has been experiencing pain and swelling in the right knee and left arm. This causes difficulty walking and moving. She was reviewed at our medical partner's care center, Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Kati, and was diagnosed with septic arthritis, a painful joint infection. If left untreated, the condition can cause irreversible joint damage. Fortunately, on June 2nd, Bintou will undergo repair surgery with the help of our medical partner, Muso. They are requesting $619 to fund Bintou's surgery. Once completed, this procedure will prevent serious long-term complications and allow her to live a more active, healthier life. Bintou's family shared, "We hope to see Bintou fully healed so that she can walk properly again."

This way, doctors can ensure the safety of both mother and child. Our medical partner, Muso, is helping Oumou undergo a C-Section on June 1st. This procedure will cost $259, and Oumou needs your support. Oumou is eagerly awaiting the birth of her baby. "We are overjoyed and grateful to everyone involved in the success of this procedure. Dramane is a five-year old boy, and the son of a home-maker in Mali. About a month ago, Dramane started experiencing abdominal pain and a swelling near his belly button area. This worried his parents, and prompted them to seek medical attention at the nearest health center, where they were referred to our medical partner's care center, Centre de Santé de Référence (CSREF) Commune 6. Dramane has been diagnosed with an umbilical hernia, which is a tissue bulge in the belly button area, that occurs due to a weak spot in the abdominal wall. He needs surgery to prevent his symptoms from getting worse. Fortunately, on May 6th, he will undergo hernia repair surgery at our medical partner's care center. Our medical partner, Muso, is requesting $611 to fund Dramane's surgery. Once completed, this procedure will hopefully allow him to live a healthier life. Dramane's parents say: "We hope that this intervention will allow our son to live a better life."

Mah is a 14-year-old girl from Mali. Mah was brought to our medical partner's care center with abdominal pain and fever, symptoms she had been experiencing for three days. Mah has been diagnosed with an appendiceal abscess, which is caused by an infection in the abdominal cavity resulting from a perforated appendix. Physicians recommended urgent surgery to treat her condition. Our medical partner, Muso, is requesting $620 to fund Mah's surgery. On May 4th, she will undergo surgery at the Centre de Santé de Référence (CSREF) Commune 6. Once completed, this procedure will alleviate her symptoms and reduce risk of other medical complications. Mah says: "I look forward to recovering from the illness so that I can go back to school."

Adama is 24 years old and a young farmer from Mali. He is his mother's only son. Adama has a mass in the left temporal region of his head. It all started with a small lump accompanied by tingling and pain over several months. Given the growth of this mass, Adama decided to come to our medical partner's care center, Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de l'Hôpital du point G, for treatment. On June 1st, doctors will remove the mass. Our medical partner, Muso, is requesting $1,120 to cover the total cost of Adama's procedure and care. Once removed, Adama will be able to resume his daily activities free of the uncomfortable symptoms. Adama looks forward to a full recovery. He said, "Thank you to the donors who are supporting my treatment. I am truly grateful."

"Bakary is a charming nine-month-old boy who is joyous in the arms of his mother," reports our medical partner in Mali, Project Muso. Bakary was born with a life threatening anorectal malformation, which prevents him from passing stool normally. Fortunately, he received an emergency colostomy to temporarily connect his intestines and his skin. Bakary now needs the second stage of surgery, which will reattach his intestine with a reconstructed anus and allow him to regain full function in his colon. Bakary’s father is a construction worker who only makes enough money to feed his family, and cannot afford the $321 surgery. "Bakary's parents love their children and hope to send them to school to get the kind of education that they never had the opportunity to receive themselves," says Project Muso. "They dream that one day Bakary could grow up to become a doctor, to provide healing to others through his career."

Meet Dejeneba, a 26-year-old wife and mother of three living in Mali. Her husband works as a motorbike repair person and she used to wash clothing to earn money. Dejeneba can no longer work because of a growing infected ulcer on her right leg. Before visiting our partner, Project Muso, she sought care with a traditional healer who applied various mixtures to her wound, but the infection continues to worsen and is now in a severe state. "Deep skin infections like this can spread if untreated into the blood stream and lead to septic shock," explains our medical partner, Project Muso. "Definitive treatment will enable Djeneba to return to work and return to caring for her children." Her husband’s income is not enough to cover the basic needs of their children and pay for consistent care for Djeneba's wound. For $686, Dejeneba will receive lower extremity ulcer care which will prevent the wound from progressing further and allow her to continue with her daily life. “Djeneba and her husband hope that she will be able to receive definitive treatment so that she can return to her work washing clothes to support her family," says Project Muso. "And, so that she can better care for her children."
