Tihun is an outgoing young girl from Ethiopia who loves playing with children of all ages and is eager to start school. She lives with her mother in government housing in Jinka, about 600 kilometers from Addis Ababa. Her mother, a single parent, works domestic jobs such as washing clothes and baking injera, to provide for her daughter and meet their basic needs.
After Tihun’s birth, her mother faced numerous challenges. However, with support from hospital staff and government assistance, they were provided with housing. Despite her limited income, Tihun’s mother works tirelessly to care for Tihun, often borrowing money from neighbors or requesting food support when necessary.
About four months ago, Tihun experienced worsening symptoms, and her mother brought her to a health center. She received deworming medication, but her symptoms persisted and worsened, leading to increased abdominal bloating, difficulty breathing, and fainting. Eventually, her mother took her to a nearby hospital, where preparations were made for Tihun to undergo surgery. However, it was determined that surgery could not resolve the issue because the mass was too complex to remove at the time. Thankfully, a patient coordinator at the hospital informed Tihun’s mother about our medical partner, BethanyKids, and referred her for further care. The hospital staff came together to raise funds for Tihun’s transportation and accommodation.
Tihun was diagnosed with an abdominal mass, an abnormal growth in the abdomen that can cause visible swelling, discomfort, pain, and bloating. A scan confirmed the presence of a mass on her abdominal wall. She needed an emergency procedure and her family needs help raising $1,500 for her care.
Tihun’s mother said, “I’m grateful to everyone for the care. It feels more like family than just seeking treatment. I hope my child returns home safely, and I will always see you all as a part of my family.”
