Leah is 27 years old and a mother of two from Malawi. Her husband is not working at this time. Leah supports her family by selling tomatoes for a living.
In 2023, Leah began to experience troubling symptoms, including neck pains, increased mass on her neck, swallowing difficulties, frequent coughs, especially at night, inability to carry heavy items, breathlessness, and weakness. The symptoms affected her daily activities and business, reducing her income. In 2024, Leah underwent surgery that gave her temporary relief from her symptoms. As her symptoms came back, she sought further treatment. Leah was diagnosed with papillary thyroid carcinoma, a type of thyroid cancer, and requires a total thyroidectomy or the removal of her thyroid. The thyroid is the gland located in front of your neck and produces thyroid hormones. These hormones are responsible for functions such as metabolism, growth and other bodily functions. She needs surgery to prevent her symptoms from getting worse. If left untreated, it can spread to the lymph nodes and other areas of the body.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is helping Leah receive treatment. She is scheduled to undergo a thyroidectomy on January 28th where surgeons will remove all or part of her thyroid gland. This procedure will cost $1,015 and she and her family need help raising money.
Leah shared, “The symptoms are overwhelming; I just want to be myself again.”
