“We have always wanted a baby boy in our family," Lukas' mother says, "and now that we have been blessed with one, we hope that he will grow up like other children and have the ability to walk properly and carry out everyday activities without problems."
Lukas is a baby boy from Tanzania who was born with a congenital deformity in both feet, called clubfoot. The condition "will force him to walk by using the lateral aspect of his feet when he starts to walk," his doctors explain, and "if not treated, Lukas will most likely develop early osteoarthritis of the feet" as well as experience pain when he tries to move around in the future.
"His mother was very sad to find out that her son had congenital anomaly of the feet, but she was encouraged by the fact that the position of her son’s feet can be corrected," Lukas' doctors write.
Due to their seasonal and low income, Lukas’ parents cannot afford the cost of his care on their own. They are small scale farmers – relying on growing and selling maize, potatoes, and vegetables. They also work part-time jobs to earn extra money. "They work very hard to take good care of their four children," Lukas' doctors write, "they just find it difficult to earn enough money to cover the cost of treatment which their son needs."
Fortunately, we can help. With $1,160, we can fund Lukas' care and help him start walking normally!
