Chauma is a strong, 58-year-old grandmother who works her own maize and groundnut farm in Malawi. Chauma works hard to be the breadwinner in her large family of three children and five grandchildren, though she has advanced cervical cancer. She has been experiencing abdominal bleeding, making it uncomfortable for her to tend to her fields and family.
Recently, Chauma’s bleeding has been so bad that she has not been able to work in the farm or tend to her household. One of her children says, “she is a wonderful mother and grandmother, very kind and loving, and we are all looking forward to her getting better so she can be her happy hard working self again!”
For $615, Chauma will undergo a hysterectomy to remove her uterus. This procedure will stop the abnormal bleeding and pain Chauma is experiencing so that this active mother and grandmother can return to the work she loves so much; caring for her family and her farm!
