Modester is 49 years old and a farmer from Malawi. She is married with five children aged 30, 22, 20, 19, and 12. In 2012, Modester began to experience troubling symptoms, including a painless swelling on the left side of her neck. She did not seek medical care until 2020 when the swelling grew, causing symptoms like breathlessness, weakness, neck pain, and difficulty climbing steps. Despite visiting several hospitals, she could not afford surgery or transport to larger facilities. Modester was referred to our medical partner's care center, Partners in Hope Medical Center, where she was diagnosed with a goiter, which is an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland. The thyroid is the gland located in front of your neck and produces thyroid hormones. These hormones are responsible for functions such as metabolism, growth, and other bodily functions. She needs surgery to prevent her symptoms from getting worse. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is helping Modester receive treatment. She is scheduled to undergo a thyroidectomy on December 17th, where surgeons will remove all or part of her thyroid gland. This procedure will cost $1,015, and she and her family need help raising money. “The breathlessness has severely disrupted my daily activities. I look forward to your support so I can find relief and focus on farm work," Modester said.

Jane is a 63-year-old farmer and single mother of two children who both completed secondary school, and both now work at a saloon and as a mechanic respectively. Jane is a small-scale farmer but depends on her two children to sustain her. For five months, Jane has experienced post-menopausal bleeding. She has been diagnosed with cancer of the uterus. If not treated, the cancer may spread to other parts of the body and may lead to death. She needs a total hysterectomy, a procedure in which surgeons will remove her uterus. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $755 to fund Jane's surgery. On September 6th, she will undergo gynecological surgery at our medical partner's care center. Once recovered, Jane will be able to resume her daily activities and live her life free of pain. “I am scared of what the doctor has told me and hope I can get help and be operated on soon. I am the only hope for my children and wish to remain there and be strong for them. I kindly seek your consideration,” said Jane looking very concerned.

Chauma is a strong, 58-year-old grandmother who works her own maize and groundnut farm in Malawi. Chauma works hard to be the breadwinner in her large family of three children and five grandchildren, though she has advanced cervical cancer. She has been experiencing abdominal bleeding, making it uncomfortable for her to tend to her fields and family. Recently, Chauma's bleeding has been so bad that she has not been able to work in the farm or tend to her household. One of her children says, "she is a wonderful mother and grandmother, very kind and loving, and we are all looking forward to her getting better so she can be her happy hard working self again!" For $615, Chauma will undergo a hysterectomy to remove her uterus. This procedure will stop the abnormal bleeding and pain Chauma is experiencing so that this active mother and grandmother can return to the work she loves so much; caring for her family and her farm!
