Mary is a 23-year-old woman from the Philippines. She currently resides with her aunt in Cavite, though her immediate family is based in Bataan, where both of her parents work as small-scale fishermen. Due to limited financial means, her family is only able to send her minimal support, sufficient for food but not for medical expenses.
Mary spends most of her time at home assisting her aunt with daily household chores. Her uncle works as a Joyride driver, while her aunt runs a small sari-sari store, which supports their basic daily needs but does not generate enough income to cover unexpected medical costs, such as surgery.
Two years ago, Mary began to experience troubling symptoms, including recurrent and intense abdominal pain. Initially, she assumed the discomfort was due to acidity. However, over time, the symptoms worsened including vomiting. To manage the pain, she started self-medicating with antacids. Despite temporary relief, the underlying condition persisted and gradually impacted her quality of life.
Mary sought treatment at our medical partner’s care center where she was diagnosed with cholelithiasis, the presence of gall stones in the gall bladder. Mary has been advised to undergo a cholecystectomy, the surgical removal of the gallbladder. If left untreated, her symptoms will continue to worsen and put her at risk for further health complications in the future.
Our medical partner, World Surgical Foundation Philippines (WSFP), is helping Mary receive treatment. She is scheduled to undergo a cholecystectomy on July 18th. The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation is covering a portion of the procedure’s cost, and WSFP is requesting for an additional $1,031 to cover the cost of Mary’s surgery and care.
Mary says, “The support for my operation is a big help, not just for me in covering my medical expenses, but also for my family in lessening their financial burden. I am very much grateful to the supporters who help people like me needing assistance.”
