Than Soe is 20 months old, and came to Watsi’s medical partner with a large growth on her upper lip. She lives in Karen State, Burma with her parents, two older brothers (ages 12 and 5), and older sister (age 2). The family currently earns a living as rice farmers.
Than Soe was born at home. At 15 days old, her mother noticed her nose was slightly blue and a bit swollen. Since the swelling was very small, they did not seek treatment. Over time, the swelling got worse and the mass on Than Soe’s lip grew bigger and bigger – at the time of her pre-operative interview it is the size of a grape.
Than Soe needs surgery to remove the mass and prevent it from growing larger.
Her mother worries about the mass, and also worries about the money involved. Fortunately, we can help fund Than Soe’s surgery.
“I hope to send my daughter to school when she is older,” Than Soe’s mother shared. “I hope she will be a teacher or something else that contributes to the community.”

Following surgery, Than Soe’s upper lip looks smaller and she is more energetic. Her mother is now extremely happy, as her daughter is gradually getting better. Prior to the surgery, she could eat comfortably as the mass disturbed her mouth. Now, she is at ease when she eats. Than Soe’s mother is happy that her daughter might be able to contribute more to the family’s income after Than Soe finish the next follow-up appointment.
“I want my daughter to be a school teacher or be someone who can benefit the community we live in,” her mother shared.
Than Soe’s mother is very grateful to the donors who have helped her daughter. She added, “I cannot express this thankfulness with words. It’s certain that my daughter would not get any better without donors’ aid. I know that I cannot pay back the cost to them, but I will never forget their help.”
