Sovanna is 15 months old and the only child in his family from Cambodia. He lives with his parents and grandmother in Kampong Cham province. His parents are grocery sellers, and his grandparents are rice farmers. His mother shared that he loves to drink milk and play at home.
Sovanna was born with bilateral polydactyly, meaning he has an extra thumb on each hand. His condition is diagnosed as Polydactyly Wassel III, which refers to thumb duplication where the extra thumb is attached to the base of the original thumb but still has a distinct bone and joint structure. His mother wants the extra thumbs to be removed as he is developing his fine motor skills for activities like eating and grasping objects.
On March 12th, Sovanna will undergo surgery to remove the extra thumbs, which will help him use his hands more easily when he grows up. Our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, is requesting $299 to fund this procedure. This amount covers medications, surgical costs, and post-operative care to ensure proper healing after the surgery.
Sovanna’s grandmother shared, “I want to see him grow up without difficulty with his friends and in school.”
