Rood is a nine-year-old boy from Haiti. He lives with his parents and three siblings in a neighborhood of Port-au-Prince. He is in the second grade and loves playing video games and watching soccer on TV.
Rood has a cardiac condition called Tetralogy of Fallot, where there is a hole between the two lower chambers of his heart and a muscular blockage of one of the valves. These prevent his body from getting enough oxygen.
When Rood was a baby, he underwent an emergency surgery to give his body enough oxygen to survive, but he was too small to undertake a complete repair of his heart condition. Now that he is older, doctors will fully close the hole in his heart and remove the muscular blockage from his valve so that oxygen can circulate through his body normally.
Rood will fly to the Cayman Islands to receive treatment. On October 23rd, he will undergo cardiac surgery. An anonymous supporter is contributing $18,000 to pay for surgery. Our medical partner, International Cardiac Alliance, is requesting $1,500 to cover labs, medicines, and check-up and follow-up appointments. It also supports securing travel documents for the family and travel costs for the social workers from our medical partner, who will accompany Rood’s family overseas.
Rood’s father shared: “Our family has been praying for the possibility of this surgery ever since Rood was very young, and we would like to say thank you to everyone who is helping him!”
