For 54-year-old Kingsley, farming has always been an important part of his life. It is how he feeds his family, pays for daily needs, and provides for his wife and four children in Malawi. Every planting season has depended on the strength of his hands. But earlier this year, one unexpected moment changed everything. Kingsley was traveling in February when he was involved in a road traffic accident. Among the injuries he sustained, the most severe was his fractured right arm. He was admitted to hospital and began what he thought would be a short journey to recovery. Instead, it became months of moving from one health facility to another, searching for treatment that never seemed to come. Each hospital visit brought another referral, another delay, or another disappointment. His family spent what little they had on transport, consultations, and the cost of simply trying to find help. As the months passed, his arm failed to heal, and the frustration began to weigh heavily on him. It was Kingsley's eldest daughter, who works as a nurse, who finally encouraged him to seek care at our medical partner's care center, Nkhoma Hospital. There, an X-ray revealed that the broken bone had failed to heal. Doctors explained that he now requires Open Reduction and Internal Fixation (ORIF) surgery. During this procedure, the broken bone will be realigned and secured with metal plates and screws to encourage proper healing. Leaving the fracture untreated could result in permanent weakness, loss of function, chronic pain, and difficulty performing even simple daily activities. For a farmer whose livelihood depends on physical strength, surgery treatment will offer the best chance of regaining the use of his arm and returning to the work that supports his family. Hearing that surgery was finally possible filled Kingsley with relief, but it also came with another obstacle. After months of hospital visits and travel expenses, the family's savings had been exhausted. The treatment he had waited so long for was now beyond his financial reach. Fortunately, our medical partner African Mission Healthcare can help. Kingsley is scheduled for surgery on July 9th. He and his family need help raising $525 to fully fund the procedure. The surgery should allow the wound to finally heal so that he can return to his work of farming to support his family and live a more comfortable life. Kingsley shared, "I have waited a long time for someone to tell me there was still hope for my arm. I believe this surgery is my chance to work again, provide for my family, and live without the frustration I have carried since the accident. I am grateful that the donor program has given me hope when I thought I had run out of options."

Abdeta is a farmer from Ethiopia. He is an 80-year-old father of five sons and two daughters and has farmed with just one eye for most of his life after losing his right eye as a child. For decades, he managed remarkably well on his own. Despite losing his right eye in a sudden accident, he never let anything stop him from working day and night to provide for his wife and kids. Now, a growing cataract in his left eye—his only working eye—is rapidly taking away his remaining sight. Without a clear vision, he can no longer farm or care for himself, making urgent medical treatment essential for him to get his life back. Losing the vision in his only good eye has completely changed his life, taking away his physical independence and daily peace of mind. Everyday activities that used to keep him self-reliant—like farming, walking safely around his home, and taking care of himself—are now dangerous or impossible. Fortunately, on August 1st, Abdeta is scheduled to undergo cataract surgery with the help of our medical partner, Saglan Wajee General Hospital. Surgeons will remove and replace the blurred lens. After recovery, he will be able to see clearly. Now, he needs help to raise $150 to fund this procedure. Abdeta is confident that after his surgery, he will return to work fully focused, ready to give it his total attention, and pick up right where he left off. He shared, "My goal is to stop relying on others for help, feel safe walking without fear of falling, and get my life and self-reliance back."

Boxter is a farmer from Malawi. He is a husband and father of three from Dzungu village in Dowa District. He grows maize, tomatoes, and other crops to support his family. Three years ago, Boxter started experiencing urinary retention. It is a condition he chose to keep to himself, not sharing it even with those closest to him. Despite the discomfort, he continued working and providing for his family, doing his best to manage the situation quietly. Recently, he came to Nkhoma Hospital and waited in the surgical clinic to be seen. He was diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia. Doctors explained that he needs a surgery, known as TURP, to relieve his condition and restore normal function. While this gave him a clear solution, it also brought worry. Boxter began making phone calls to family members, hoping they could help him raise the money for surgery. In the end, they were only able to gather a little, which is not enough to cover the full cost. He was advised to return home and wait until more funds could be found. Still in need and uncertain of what to do next, Boxter was referred to the SAFE Program for consideration. This has given him a chance to be heard and a renewed sense of hope. He now looks forward to the possibility of receiving treatment and returning to his normal life without the burden he has carried in silence for so long. Physicians at Nkhoma Hospital determined that Boxter should undergo a prostatectomy. A prostatectomy is a surgery to remove part or all of the prostate. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $530 to fund this procedure. The treatment is scheduled to take place at Nkhoma Hospital on April 29th. Once completed, it will hopefully improve Boxter's quality of life. Boxter said, “I have stayed with this problem for a long time without telling anyone. I was afraid and did not know how I would manage it. Now that I have a chance to be treated, I am hoping for support. I want to be well again and live without this condition.”
