“What I’m really looking forward to is being able to walk again without crutches,” says Mateo, a 64-year-old man from Guatemala, who works in the construction business.
17 years ago, Mateo was in a terrible car accident that required his left leg to be amputated. Our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq, tells us that “since then, he has been unable to walk and his mobility has been very limited. He’s happy to have made the connection to the Watsi and WK teams, and he’s looking forward to getting a device and being able to walk and work again like before.”

Mateo received a prosthetic leg to allow him to walk again.
Our partner, Wuqu’ Kuwoq, says, “This is really an amazing case. Mateo lost his leg more than 15 years ago in a car accident and has been basically immobile since then. Now, for the first time, we have given him hope and the ability to get on with his life. This leg will increase his self esteem, mobility, earning potential, and quality of life.”
Mateo told WK he had “given up hope that there would ever be a solution to my problem. Now I can walk again!”
