Afiya is a three-year-old toddler from Preah Sihanouk in Cambodia. She lives with her parents and two older siblings, a nine-year-old brother and a six-year-old sister. Her father works as a distributor, obtaining products from manufacturers and distributing them to stores, while her mother is a homemaker. At home, Afiya likes to drink milk, eat snacks, and watch TikTok videos with her mother. About six months ago, Afiya suffered burn injuries to her lower legs while visiting her grandmother. The incident occurred when she was accidentally exposed to hot water that her grandmother was using to prepare fish sauce. She was taken to a hospital where she was admitted for two months, during which she received skin grafts. Presently, she has developed flexion contractures of her left knee, a condition that prevents her knee from fully straightening or extending. This has made it tough for her to move around comfortably, whether she is walking or sitting. It is also causing her discomfort and pain whenever she tries to stretch her leg out. When Afiya's family learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, they traveled for two hours seeking treatment. On June 12th, surgeons at CSC will perform a burn contracture release surgery to enable her move with much ease after recovery. Afiya's family is able to contribute $100 towards her medical costs, but need help raising $395 more for the procedure. Afiya's mom says: "We hope that after surgery, Afiya will be able to walk and sit more comfortably, and that she will not experience pain anymore."
