Fazilio is a farmer with many grandchildren from Malawi. He enjoys chatting with people in his free time.

Since September of last year, Fazilio has had a hydrocele, which is a swelling in a sensitive area. He is experiencing pelvic pain and weakness due to this hydrocele. Fortunately, on May 7, he will undergo hydrocele repair surgery at Nkhoma Hospital, our medical partner’s care center.

Our medical partner, World Altering Medicine, is requesting $302 to fund Fazilio’s surgery. The requested money pays for supplies, medications, and six nights of hospital stay. He looks forward to returning to farming and normal life.

He says, “I am so grateful for this assistance, thank you so much!”

  • Alternatives

What does the treatment process look like?

Usually, treatment starts with pain medication only. If the condition sees no improvement, the patient will be referred for more specialized care, which can be provided at our medical partner's care center, Nkhoma Hospital.

What is the impact of this treatment on the patient’s life?

The patient will experience immediate improvement of the swelling and less pain.

What potential side effects or risks come with this treatment?

As with most surgeries, there is risk to undergoing anesthesia. There are also minor risks of infection or bleeding.

How accessible is treatment in the area? What is the typical journey like for a patient to receive care?

The nearest alternative hospital is 50 kilometers away. Because a hydrocele is not seen as an emergency condition, patients may experience long delays or have their surgeries postponed. This process can take several weeks or even months.

What are the alternatives to this treatment?

Painkillers can provide temporary relief, but they will not treat the swelling.
