Phyo is an 18-month-old baby boy who lives with his mother, four-year-old brother, grandparents, aunts, and uncle in a refugee camp in Thailand.
Our medical partner, Burma Border Projects (BBP), reports that Phyo has a neural tube defect between his eyes called encephalocele. This condition is caused by the failure of the neural tube to close completely during fetal development.
“Two days after Phyo was born his mother noticed some swelling between his eyes,” BBP says. “She first thought it was just baby fat so she wasn’t concerned. However, when the swelling developed into a hard mass the family became very worried and took him to the camp clinic; he was three months old at the time.”
The doctors at the camp clinic were unable to help Phyo, as he needed more specialized treatment. That’s when he came to BBP, Watsi’s partner hospital.
$1,500 will fund surgery for Phyo to repair the encephalocele. Phyo’s parents “hope to see Phyo and his older brother become educated and lead healthy lives.”

“Phyo’s energy level has increased markedly since his surgery and he is constantly on the move, exploring his surroundings with a parent following close behind,” his doctor shares. “He is sleeping better, has no pain at the surgical site and is eating well. Phyo can also see better; the mass was large enough to be distracting and it obstructed his vision. The incision is healing well and it is difficult to even see the surgery site - there will be minimal scarring to his face.”
“I am so happy to have my son healthy again and the family together,” Phyo’s father says. “I would like my son to be educated as he grows up; hopefully, he will become a doctor so he can help his brother (or others like him) or his family or others in need of medical care.”
