Sadam and his family live and work in a small town in Ethiopia. Sadam’s father works as a carpenter, doing odd jobs to support his wife and three children. A few years ago, Sadam was involved in an accident that caused internal complications. He was given emergency medical attention, but his family was unable to pay for his surgery. As a result, he has developed a fistula that makes it extremely difficult for him to go to the bathroom. Doing so is painful and leads to recurring bladder infections. "I want to see my son to be able to play and go to school like other children,” say Sadam's father of his son's condition. The surgery Sadam needs will cost $1,500, and will correct the complications in his intestines and urethra. Once treated, we expect that the treatment will restore Sadam's excretory functions and reduce his pain.

This is Kamza, a sweet two-year-old from the Comoros Islands. She has congenital nevus on her scalp - a rare condition that presents as a dark-colored patch of skin at birth. These marks often become cancerous, and can be life-threatening if not treated properly. Kamza lives in Kenya with her two older siblings and parents, where she has received initial medical care and treatment. However, the scar remains on her scalp and may become malignant if left untreated. "I want my daughter to live a long and healthy life. I want her to go to school and play with other children," her mother shares. For $1,500, Kamza will receive surgery allowing her to grow up healthy, social, and strong. Most days after school, Muluken played soccer with his four brothers and his friends. Five months ago, he developed malaria and a secondary infection of his legs. Eventually this infection became osteomyelitis, a bone infection. Muluken has had difficulty walking due to the pain - he even had to drop out of school. Muluken is in the eighth grade, and his dream is to become a doctor. He's definitely well on his way, as his favorite subject is chemistry! Muluken is the fourth of six children. His father is a day worker who makes less than two dollars a day. He is unable to provide the financial support for his son's care, so they are depending on our help for Muluken's future. Treatment will cost $745, and will allow Muluken walk again without pain and return to school. Muluken's treatment will include powerful antibiotics to get to the source of the infection, debridement (removal of infected tissue), and nutritional support. Donating $160 will cover the cost of his surgery. His room and board will cost $460. The remaining $125 will be used to pay for incidental expenses. Last October, William started experiencing pain in his right knee. Around the same time, his mother noticed that his knee was growing inward, making it difficult for him to walk. William’s family didn’t have any idea what was happening. They grew increasingly worried, but every time they sought medical care they were told they couldn’t be helped or sent somewhere else. Fortunately, a friend recommended that William’s mother take him to CURE’s hospital in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia. Doctors at CURE immediately diagnosed William with a knock knee and identified a surgery that could correct his condition. The surgery William needs costs $1000. His parents cannot afford to pay out-of-pocket for his medical care. There’s not much of a social safety net for them to fall back on, so we hope to raise the money needed to fully cover the cost of his treatment.

Janaki is a 14-year-old girl from Nepal with a hearing condition called chronic suppurative otitis media. She has suffered from this condition since she was two and a half years old. She cannot hear unless someone speaks very close to her ear. Without treatment, Janaki’s condition will likely get worse. Janaki lives with her parents and her three older brothers. She loves school but has struggled to keep up because she can’t hear what her teachers are saying. She finally quit her studies last month because of her condition. Janaki stays home most days to help with household chores because her friends make fun of her. She likes to study every subject and told her doctors that she will go back to school if she can get her hearing problem fixed. Fortunately, Janaki’s doctors identified her as a good candidate for a mastiodectomy. They tell us that this procedure will prevent any futher complications of her condition and improve her hearing enough for her to continue her education. Let’s make it happen for her!
