Alex is the 3rd born in a family of four children and hails from Longonot, Naivasha, in Nakuru county. His mother told us he likes playing with other kids at home. Alex came to Cure Hospital accompanied by his mother, Grace, a housewife, and his father, farmer. Alex was born with multiple disabilities - spina bifida, hydrocephalus, and bilateral foot deformity. He underwent treatment for spina bifida when he was five days old, and hydrocephalus treatment was done at the age of eight months. Currently, he tiptoes as he walks and often falls. He is scheduled to undergo bilateral serial casting and then foot reconstruction surgery. The treatment will be impactful to the young boy because he will be able to walk, run, and play like other children and continue with his education uninterrupted. Alex's mother said, "I believe the joy of a mother is to see her children growing well and not with challenges, and therefore, I would love to see Alex walking normally like other children if given assistance."

Vireak is a 26-year-old garment worker who has been married for one year. His wife also works in a garment factory. In his free time, Vireak enjoys playing football, snooker, listening to music, and meeting with his friends. Vireak was in a traffic accident in October 2019 and fractured his left femur. Doctors fixated a nail in his left leg to treat the fracture. Now, the bone is healed and the nail needs to be removed to prevent future complications and infections. Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, can help. On September 2nd, Vireak will undergo a hardware removal procedure, which will cost $304. This procedure will allow him to be full recovered from his accident. Vireak says, "I hope my leg is without pain and I recover quickly so I can return to working and supporting my family."

Yan is a 66-year-old woman from Cambodia. She has five sons and one daughter. Her husband passed away many years ago, so she lives alone close to her children. She enjoys cooking for her family and visiting the local pagoda to hear the chanting of the monks. In June 2022, Yan fell and dislocated her left elbow. She visited a Khmer traditional healer, but her elbow has remained numb and swollen. She has limited movement, is not able to use her arm, and is in chronic pain. When Yan learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for two hours seeking treatment. On November 21st, surgeons at CSC will perform an open reduction of her left elbow. Yan needs assistance with the $485 cost of the surgery. After surgery, her pain will be healed and she will be able to use her arm again. Yan shared: "After surgery, I hope my left elbow will have no pain or swelling and I can cook for my family again."

Justine is a 35-year-old married mother of two children who is pregnant and expecting a new baby. She works as a farmer alongside her husband to earn a living for their family. Justine has been receiving pregnancy care at a local health facility. She was recently referred to our medical partner's care center where a Caesarean section delivery was recommended to prevent complications such as uterine rupture. Fortunately, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare (AMH), is helping Justine receive care to ensure a safe delivery for her and her baby. On November 4th, she will deliver her baby via C-Section at AMH's care center. Now, she and her husband need help raising $252 to fund her procedure and care. Justine shared, "our survival is entirely based on farming and casual labor. I really can’t raise funds for my surgery all on my own and I kindly ask for your support."

Babikyengyire is the mother of one child who is 7 years old and in first grade at primary school. Her husband died in an accident in 2012. She later managed to buy a piece of land and constructed a three-room semi-permanent house for shelter. A long time ago, in 1989, she thought she was gaining weight with an expanded neck because it was painless. She got married in 2009 and when she got pregnant in 2012, she developed neck pains especially after walking long distances. After delivery, the swelling increased as well as her pain. She is a member of the church choir, but she could no longer sing because it was too painful. Currently, she feels much pain when she wears a mask due to the ongoing COVID-19 regulations in the country. She is hopeful to find a solution from Watsi's Medical Partner Care Center Rushoroza Hospital. At Rushoroza, she presented with long-standing history of bi-nodular neck swelling. Thyrotoxicosis, airway obstruction, difficulty in breathing could be the end result if not treated through a thyroidectomy. Babikyengyire is a businesswoman who carries clothes around town to her customers, though she shared that she is finding it challenging now due to her condition. She feels uncomfortable being in public because of her neck swelling. She seeks financial support for her surgery because her small business can hardly raise a fraction of the total surgery charges. Babikyengyire shared, “I hope for a successful surgery. After the surgery, I believe that I will be able to travel long distances that will help me reach out to more customers and improve my business.”

Doun is an 80-year-old farmer from Cambodia. He has two daughters, six sons, and many grandchildren. Doun lives with his youngest daughter who is a garment worker. Doun enjoys listening to the monks pray on the radio. One year ago, Doun developed a cataract in his right eye, causing him blurry vision, itching, and tearing. He has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside. When Doun learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, he traveled for three and half hours with his son seeking treatment. On November 23rd, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in his right eye. After recovery, he will be able to see clearly. Now, he needs help to fund this $229 procedure. Doun said, "At my old age I would like to see my family well, this is my last wish for my life."

Yeat is a 65-year-old grandmother of ten from Cambodia. She has four daughters, one son, and enjoys visiting the pagoda in her spare time. Three months ago, Yeat developed a cataract in her left eye, causing her blurry vision, irritation, and tearing. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside. When Yeat learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for four hours seeking treatment. On August 6, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her left eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $211 procedure. She says, "I hope that I will be able to see more clearly than before, and return to the pagoda and attend the ceremonies."

Elisha is a child from Kenya. Elisha is the last born in a family of 5. He is currently a nursery school boy and likes reading and scribbling things on a paper. He also likes playing with other children both at home and at school. The family used to live in Marakwet but fled as a result of ethnic clashes. They now live in a village called Kachibora at a farm. Elisha has clubfoot of his right foot. Clubfoot is a condition in which the foot is twisted out of shape. This causes difficulty walking and even wearing shoes. Fortunately, Elisha traveled to visit our medical partner's care center, AIC Cure International Hospital. There, surgeons will perform clubfoot repair surgery on October 07. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $1,224 to fund Elisha's clubfoot repair. After treatment, he will be able to walk easily and wear closed shoes. “Your help will be highly appreciated. Continue doing good.” Elisha’s father noted.

Byarugaba is a small scale farmer from Uganda. He is a father to four children; all married and are causal labors. He and his wife and both practice small scale farming. Three years ago, Byarugaba has had an inguinal hernia. This hernia causes him pain and discomfort and if not treated, it may result in intestinal tissue damage Fortunately, on September 17th, he will undergo hernia repair surgery at our medical partner's care center. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $219 to fund Byarugaba's surgery. Once completed, this procedure will hopefully allow him to live more comfortably and confidently. Byarugaba says “I can’t dream of the day I am relieved of this condition so as to continue with cultivation.”

Meet Samantha 6-year-old cheerful girl from Kenya. Two years ago, Samantha started experiencing difficulty swallowing and would complain of a sore throat. She was put on drugs at a local hospital to no fruition. A friend referred her aunt to our facility. Samantha was diagnosed with symptomatic adenotonsillar and surgery recommended. When treated, she will be able to breathe with ease and reduce the pain on the throat. Samantha lives with her aunt as her family is not able to support her education. Her parents are peasants, with her father a bus driver while the mother is a housewife. Samantha is the firstborn child and has one sibling. The family is not able to raise the funds needed for her surgery.
