Meet San! San is 42 years old, and works as a seamstress in Burma to help support her husband and elderly parents. A few months ago, San visited her local midwife because she was experiencing abdominal and back pain, fatigue, and joint pain. All of these symptoms were causing her a great deal of stress as well. San’s midwife referred her to our medical partner, Burma Border Projects, where she was diagnosed with a uterine tumor known as a myoma. San is grateful for this access to care -- she tells us, “the poor always have to struggle to get food daily and at the hospital there are not enough health workers.” San has not been able to work due to the pain and swelling caused by the myoma, and has been additionally distressed because her husband’s truck broke down, making it impossible for him to work as a driver and earn enough to support their family. For $1500, San will have surgery to remove the uterine myoma. After this surgery, her pain and distension will subside and she will be able to return to work and supporting her family. Cheyna is a bright and determined 16-year-old from Cambodia. He gets good grades in school, and when he finishes his education he wants to work at a non-profit organization with children. Cheyna is worried that his grades might start suffering, however, because of his recent absences from school. Cheyna is suffering from a burn contracture (an area of tight, thick, and immobile skin that develops after a severe burn) on his foot. As a result, Cheyna is unable to find shoes that fit him properly and experiences pain while walking. Cheyna is from a very remote area near Cambodia's border with Laos. He traveled 14 hours by van to seek treatment at Children's Surgical Centre. Cheyna is extremely distressed about his education and hopes to get the treatment he needs to keep up in school and achieve his dreams!

At 21, Nancy is about to become a mother to a new baby! She and her husband are farmers. "We grow maize and beans for family use, and sugarcane for money to sustain the family." Nancy is participating in Lwala Community Alliance's maternal health program. For several weeks, Nancy has been receiving visits from a maternal and child health worker. They "remind me of the danger signs, that if I see any of those I should go to the hospital." In just a few weeks, Nancy will give birth. Zoila is a K'ichee' speaking Maya woman from Guatemala. Zoila's cultural roots are deep and strong, but they make it difficult for her to navigate the Spanish-language healthcare system. This, compounded by the fact that Zoila is a subsistence farmer without a cash income, makes it extremely difficult for her to access medical care. Zoila recently attended a cervical cancer screening program at Wuqu' Kawoq. Doctors diagnosed her with a precancerous cervical lesion. The lesion is not causing any symptoms right now, but if it is not treated it will progress to cervical cancer.
