Ry is a 62-year-old carpenter from Cambodia. He has one son and two daughters. In his free time he watches the news on his phone. Five months ago, Ry developed a cataract in his left eye, causing him blurry vision, pain, and hard to recognize something. He has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside. When Ry learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, he traveled for one hour seeking treatment. On April 27th, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in his left eye. After recovery, he will be able to see clearly. Now, he needs help to fund this $229 procedure. Ry said, "I hope my eye pain and poor vision will improve so I can work as a carpenter again."

Zakayo is a one-year-old baby from Tanzania. He is the last born child in a family of three children. He is playful, smiley, and a very friendly boy. His parents are small-scale farmers of maize, bean, and vegetable. They depend entirely on what they harvest for their survival and supporting their children. Zakayo has clubfoot of his right foot. Clubfoot is a condition in which the foot is twisted out of shape. This causes difficulty walking and even wearing shoes. Fortunately, Zakayo traveled to visit our medical partner's care center, Arusha Lutheran Medical Centre, and receive care. There, surgeons will perform clubfoot repair surgery on August 18th. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $890 to fund Zakayo's clubfoot repair. After treatment, he will be able to walk easily and wear shoes. Zakayo’s mother says, “Please help correct my son’s foot so that he is able to walk like his siblings and lead a normal life. The cost is too high for us to afford it.”

Sivorn is a 62-year-old cleaner from Cambodia. She is the oldest of five siblings. She lives with her brother and sister and helps take care of their home. In her free time, she likes watching dramas on TV, and enjoys going to Church near her community. Five years ago, Sivorn developed a cataract in her right eye, causing her tearing, blurry vision, and photophobia. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside. When Sivorn learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for two-and-a-half hours seeking treatment. On July 2nd, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her right eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $229 procedure. Sivorn said, "I hope after surgery I will be able to see everything better. I hope I can do all my work myself and look after my brother and sister well. I want to cook food for them, and clean up their house more easily."

Arinda is a 20-month-old baby from Uganda and the only child to his parents. His mother is a roadside trader who sells onions, tomatoes, and fresh beans. His father is a bicycle mechanic and they live together in a single-roomed rental house deep in the village. Since birth, Arinda has had an inguinal scrotal hernia. Arinda is in pain and if not treated, it may result in intestinal tissue damage. Fortunately, on September 8th, he will undergo hernia repair surgery at our medical partner's care center. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $230 to fund Arinda's surgery. Once completed, this procedure will hopefully allow him to live more comfortably and confidently as he grows up. Arinda's mother says, “I hope that by surgery my child will get well to have proper growth like all the others.”

Kruy is a 40-year-old rice farmer from Cambodia. She has two sons, two daughters, her husband is a fisherman. She likes to make food for her children and take care of their family's house. Fifteen years ago, Kruy had an ear infection. This infection caused a cholesteatoma, or an abnormal skin growth, to develop in the middle ear behind the ear drum. For this reason, Kruy experiences hearing loss, ringing, and ear discharge. She cannot hear clearly when she communicates with other people, and she cannot work outside the house independently. Kruy traveled to our medical partner's care center to receive treatment. On May 7th, she will undergo a mastoidectomy procedure in her right ear. During this procedure, ENT surgeons will remove the cholesteatoma. Our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, is requesting $925 to fund this procedure. This covers medications, supplies, and inpatient care. Kruy said, "I hope that after my operation, the infection will finally be gone, and I can feel what it is like to have clear hearing again."

Liam is a toddler and only child from Kenya. Liam’s parents grow vegetables in their small farm and later sell the vegetables in order to provide for their family. Since April this year, Liam has had an inguinal hernia. This causes him pain and his parents share that this causes him to cry a lot. Fortunately, on September 1st, he will undergo repair surgery at our medical partner's care center. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $444 to fund Liam's surgery. Once completed, this procedure will hopefully allow him to live more comfortably. Liam’s father shared: “With no other place to find extra money, any help offered will be highly appreciated.”

Meet Selina, a hard-working 55-year-old widow and mother of seven children from Kenya. Though three of her children have married and live on their own, Selina still fully provides for the youngest four children by running a small farm where she grows maize to sell at the market. “Selina has a distended abdomen due to an abdominal mass that has been growing for almost seven years,” report our medical partners at African Mission Healthcare Foundation. “If surgery is not done, the mass could continue growing and might become cancerous.” Selina and her relatives have tried to raise money for treatment for Selina, but cannot raise the full amount needed. For $800 we can add to the money Selina and her family already raised to fund a total abdominal hysterectomy. After the surgery, Selina will no longer experience the pain nor cancer risk associated with her abdominal mass. “I want to own my own home and ensure that my young children have quality education so that they can have brighter futures,” shares Selina. Let’s help Selina return to work so that she can realize her dream!

"Moise is a smart little boy, he was okay when suddenly he became unable to walk," Moise mother says. A few months ago she noticed that her three-year-old son was having trouble supporting his head and moving on his own; she took him to our partners, Project Medishare in Haiti, and a CT scan revealed that Moise has hydrocephalus. Moise is the third born in his family and used to go to school and play with his siblings. His parents are poor farmers and they cannot afford the cost of the surgery Moise needs to recover. For $1260, Moise will receive a surgery that "will positively change his health condition," and remove the excessive fluids that are putting pressure on his brain. After the operation, Moise will resume healthy development and regain all of his faculties. His grandmother shares, "I am very happy because my little son is going to have the surgery to fix his condition, we don’t have the money and you provides care to him, thank you very much."

“Huor’s vision began to blur two years ago. Since then, she has had a hard time cooking and caring for her family,” our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, tells us. Meet Huor, a 59-year-old woman from Cambodia. Huor has a mature cataract in her left eye. Fortunately, cataract surgeries are easy, pain-free, and have a high success rate of improving eyesight. With treatment, the clouding in Huor’s vision can be removed completely. "I look forward to helping on the farm again and making and selling handicrafts to earn money to support my family,” Huor tells us. Huor will also be able to watch her favorite TV show again, something that Huor tells us she truly misses. For only $150, we can make the difference between a speedy recovery and permanent blindness. Let’s get Huor back on track and allow her to take care of her family again.

"After Oeun receives treatment she is excited to have a good looking face again and get back out to the farm," says our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC). Oeun is a 44-year-old mother in Cambodia who has been diagnosed with ptosis, or "drooping of the eyelid". She has four sons and likes to listen to the news in the evenings. "About two and a half years ago, Oeun was accidentally hit with a piece of wood on her right eye, and now she cannot fully open her right eyelid," says CSC. "She has blurry vision and it is hard for her to see things clearly. [...] Since her vision has been bad, she has been staying home and doing house work." Oeun's condition also affects her appearance, as one of her eyes is open while the other one droops. $290 will fund the treatment necessary to correct Oeun's ptosis. Our medical partners expect that the treatment will allow her to keep her eye fully open and have the ability to see clearly. Let's help Oeun regain her vision and her independence!

"Thang is excited to have her arm at full strength again so she can return to work on her fishing boat," our medical partners at Children's Surgical Centre (CSC) tell us. Thang is a 48-year-old mother and grandmother in Cambodia who has a broken right arm. Thang has four children and seven grandchildren. In her spare time she likes listening to music on the radio and watching Khmer television. "About two months ago, Thang was working when she fell down and broke her forearm," says CSC. As a result, "She cannot lift any weight with her right arm," explains CSC, and she is unable to work. Furthermore, Thang must rely heavily on her husband, creating an undue burden to the family. $405 will cover the cost of an open reduction internal fixation surgery (ORIF), a procedure that will allow Thang to regain the use of her right arm and relieve her of the pain she currently experiences. “Orn said she is most looking forward to planting bananas and other fruit around her home and picking mangoes with her daughter,” our partners at the Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC) tell us. Meet Orn, a 68-year-old mother from Cambodia. She supports her family working on a rice farm and as a clothing tailor. Orn has a cataract on her right eye, her vision is blurry and she needs surgery to have it restored fully. “Orn hopes that her eyesight can be fully restored so she can return to work,” our partner CSC tells us. For $150, Orn's eyesight will be restored and she will be able to get back to supporting her family and enjoy a better quality of life.
