Baby Emebet is one month old and lives in Ethiopia with his loving family. His father is a teacher, and his mother is a homemaker. He is his parents' first child. Baby Emebet was born with a condition called esophageal atresia, which means his upper esophagus ends abnormally early and does not connect with the lower esophagus and stomach. As a result, he cannot eat or swallow. He receives nutrition through an external tube connecting to his stomach, but this is not a permanent solution. Without treatment, Baby Emebet is at high risk for lung infections and other complications. Emebet needs surgery so he can eat normally. Dina is a beautiful and intelligent four-year-old girl. She is the youngest of seven children and comes from Cite Soleil, one of the poorest areas in Haiti. From the time Dina was born, she has had obstruction that prevents her from properly using the restroom. Her condition causes intense abdominal discomfort, and recently became so severe that she needed an emergency colostomy. For $1,500, Dina will receive the surgeries and follow-up care needed for her to put this problem behind her. After the procedures, Dina’s mother hopes to send her to school so she can enjoy life with her friends like a normal child.

Following the birth of her second child, Padam Kala began noticing a discomfort in her pelvis. She was eventually diagnosed with a uterine prolapse, a condition where the muscles holding the uterus in place begin to fail, resulting in extreme sensitivity and risk for ulceration and infection. In the last seven years, Padam Kala's pain has only worsened, and is now accompanied by abdominal bleeding and other symptoms that affect her day-to-day life. Padam Kala has found that her condition causes her extreme discomfort while working in the fields during farming season as well as when she works odd manual labor jobs to supplement the family's income. In addition, the odor has caused Padam Kala to be reluctant to socialize with family and friends. We are excited to work with Nyaya Health to help raise the $895 needed for a hysterectomy. The procedure will help Padam Kala better provide for her family and be more active in her community.

Meet Eden, a sweet two-year-old girl from Ethiopia. She already knows she wants to be a doctor when she grows up, and is excited to begin school in a few years. She loves playing with her brother and sister at home. Eden lives with trigger thumb on both hands, which is the painful locking of the thumb. This deformity interferes with hand function and will make it especially difficult to learn in school. The appearance of her hands also carries a social stigma, and other kids regularly tease Eden. Eden's father says, “I always worry about her future, because I know it might seem her hand problem is little but still I know it is going to cause her a lot of problems when she grows up." We can end this worry. For $1000, Eden will receive trigger thumb release on both of her hands, which will allow her to develop the right motor skills she will need as both a student and an adult. Meet eight-year-old Christna, a playful young girl from Haiti. Christna loves to play with other children but is easily exhausted, especially in hot weather, because she has congenital heart disease. Caused when there is a hole in the septum that separates the ventricles in the heart, Christna’s condition makes her out of breath and very tired during and after physical activity and exertion. Without surgery, doctors say Christna will face serious complications and will continue to become tired after minimal activity. 
Christna lives with her parents, two brothers and sister. Her father is a farmer and her mother cares for the family. They cannot afford the cost of surgery. They say, “We think it is a blessing from God that Christna can have her surgery. It’s a miracle to us!” 
For $1,500, doctors can repair the hole in Christna’s heart by performing a cardiopulmonary bypass. With surgery, Christna will be able to grow up healthy and lead a normal life. Let’s help Christna play with her friends again!
