On is a rice farmer from Cambodia. She has one daughter and two sons and nine grandchildren. She enjoys watching TV programs and listening to monks pray on the radio. Two years ago, On developed a cataract in her right eye, causing her partial blindness, tearing, itchiness, irritation, and a cloudy lens. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside. When On learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for two hours seeking treatment. On April 9, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her right eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $211 procedure. She says, "I hope my surgery is successful so that I can recognize faces, I can walk outside by myself, and I can help my family to do work at home."

Tha is a 34-year-old woman from Burma. She lives with her husband, who is an agricultural day laborer, and their two young children. In recent years, Tha has developed pain in her hips. With the help of our medical partner, she underwent a hip replacement surgery on her one of her hips, and she now has to receive surgery on her other hip. At BCMF's care center, surgeons can perform a total hip replacement to relieve Tha of her pain and allow her to walk easily. Treatment is scheduled for April 5, and Tha needs help raising $1,500 to pay for this procedure. "I am very happy to receive surgery for my other hip," said Tha. "Without your help, I would not be able to afford the cost of the surgery."

Princess is a baby from Kenya. She lives with her family in a two-room rental house. Princess’s parents operate a retail shop. Princess has been diagnosed with encephalocoele, a type of neural tube defect in which brain tissues and overlying membranes protrude through openings in the skull. Encephalocoele usually results from a failure of the neural tube to completely close during fetal development. Without treatment, Princess is at risk of developmental delays, brain damage, or premature death. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $929 to fund encephalocoele repair surgery for Princess. The procedure is scheduled to take place on April 23. Hopefully, the repair of this condition will allow Princess to grow up healthy. “I look forward to the day we will get back home with Princess treated,” shares Princess’s mother.

Bivol is a driver from Cambodia. He has two sons and one daughter. He likes to repair things around his house in his free time. Two months ago, Bivol was in a motor vehicle accident that resulted in the dislocation of his right elbow. It is difficult for him to use his right arm and he can't bend his elbow. Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, can help. On April 5, Bivol will undergo a fracture repair procedure, which will cost $430. This procedure will improve the mobility in his right arm and allow him to return to work. He says, "I hope after the operation I can bend my right arm without any pain. I will be able to return to work."

Saturday is a small-scale farmer from Uganda. He is married and a father of four adult children. His two daughters are married, while his sons are self-employed. Saturday and his wife practice farming to meet their basic needs. For six years, Saturday has had a growing mass on his right shoulder. It is painful and has affected his ability to work on his farm. Saturday traveled to our medical partner's care center to receive treatment. On April 5, surgeons will remove the mass. Now, Saturday needs help to raise $187 to fund this procedure. Saturday says, “I hope to get better after surgery and I continue with cultivation.”

Malaki is a farmer from Malawi. He lives with his son. With his children, he runs the family farm, while his wife works in the city to help provide for the family. Malaki raises chickens to supplement the family income. In his free time, he likes to talk with his wife and attend church with his son and grandchildren. Since 2015, Malaki has been experiencing pain and urinary difficulty. These symptoms are caused by an enlarged prostate, a condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia. He needs to undergo a prostate resection surgery, a procedure in which surgeons will remove part of the enlarged gland. Our medical partner, World Altering Medicine, is requesting $733 to fund Malaki's surgery. On April 5, he will undergo prostate surgery at Nkhoma Hospital, our medical partner's care center. The requested money pays for supplies, medications, and two weeks of hospital stay. Malaki and his family were thrilled to find out his surgery would be funded. Malaki is looking forward to going home and again being able to work his farm. He says, "Thank you."

Sao Teah is a street food vendor from Cambodia. She has three daughters and one son. She likes spending time with her grandchildren. Two months ago, Sao Teah fell outside and fractured her left forearm. She has pain in her elbow and has difficulty using her arm. Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, can help. On April 3, Sao Teah will undergo a fracture repair procedure, which will cost $430. This procedure will help her use her arm easily again. She says, "I look forward to having improved mobility in my arm and spending time with my family."

Savoeun is a 39-year-old seller of small goods from Cambodia. She is married with three children and likes to watch TV. Savoeun has a ten-year history of hip pain, which is gradually worsening and now severe. She is limited to walking with a zimmer frame just a few steps at a time, making it difficult to look after young children. Fortunately, Savoeun learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre. At CSC, surgeons can perform a total hip replacement to relieve Savoeun of her pain and allow her to walk easily. Treatment is scheduled for January 9, and Savoeun needs help raising $1,025 to pay for this procedure. She says, "I hope to walk better after my operation."

Heidy is an 8-year-old girl from Guatemala's highlands who has suffered from seizures for her entire life. Her father works in the countryside doing agricultural work, while her mother cares for Heidy at home and sells handmade bracelets in the local market. Heidy loves when her older sister sings to her and shows her stuffed animals. Due to her persistent seizures, Heidy has experienced developmental delays. Moreover, she struggles with her eating and is severely underweight. Heidy suffers from seizures on a daily basis, and, without medication, her health will continue to decline. As Heidy's family cannot afford to pay for medications that would halt her seizures, our medical partner, Wuqu' Kawoq, is requesting $1,044 to help fund a full diagnostic examination and appropriate medications for Heidy. With the development of an appropriate treatment plan, the length and frequency of Heidi's seizures will hopefully be reduced, not only relieving Heidy's mother of her worries, but also improving the quality of Heidy's life as a whole.

Olivia is 30 years old and works as a small farmer with her husband in Uganda. They have four young children in primary school, and Olivia is currently pregnant with her fifth child. Olivia is suspected of having placenta previa, which can cause severe bleeding during the pregnancy and delivery due to the location of the placenta. This means that Olivia needs to be closely monitored when she delivers her baby via C-section. Our medical partner, The Kellermann Foundation, will begin monitoring Olivia on June 10. Olivia has contributed $7 towards her medical bill but needs our help paying for the remaining $241, which will cover her prenatal vitamins, hospital stay, and ultrasounds. "I thank the donors with all my heart for their generosity," says Olivia.

Her father works as an agricultural laborer, and her mother weaves and sells traditional Mayan textiles. Lesly was recently diagnosed with malnutrition, a condition that occurs from consuming too little protein, calories, and nutrients. In the short term, malnutrition means Lesly has little energy to grow, and that her immune system is weak, leaving her vulnerable to diseases that further compromise her growth. She may also face long-term consequences of malnutrition if left untreated, such as increased risk of chronic illness and a lowered IQ. Concerned for her well-being, her mother took Lesly to our medical partner, Wuqu' Kawoq, for treatment. Beginning June 22, Lesly will receive micronutrients and food supplementation, as well as regular growth monitoring. Community health workers will also teach her mother how to create a nutrient rich diet using limited resources. The $492 requested will cover all expenses of her continued treatment, allowing her to gain weight, strengthen her immune system, and catch up with other children her age. "I hope with the nutrition program my daughter will better her growth and development," says Lesly's mother. "I have every intention to put my time and effort into collaborating so that my daughter grows.”
