Heidy is an 8-year-old girl from Guatemala’s highlands who has suffered from seizures for her entire life. Her father works in the countryside doing agricultural work, while her mother cares for Heidy at home and sells handmade bracelets in the local market. Heidy loves when her older sister sings to her and shows her stuffed animals.
Due to her persistent seizures, Heidy has experienced developmental delays. Moreover, she struggles with her eating and is severely underweight. Heidy suffers from seizures on a daily basis, and, without medication, her health will continue to decline.
As Heidy’s family cannot afford to pay for medications that would halt her seizures, our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq, is requesting $1,044 to help fund a full diagnostic examination and appropriate medications for Heidy. With the development of an appropriate treatment plan, the length and frequency of Heidi’s seizures will hopefully be reduced, not only relieving Heidy’s mother of her worries, but also improving the quality of Heidy’s life as a whole.
