Eric is a 48-year-old man from DR Congo, but presently lives in a refugee settlement in Uganda. Eric and his family were forced to flee due to instability in their country, and have now lived in Uganda eight years, trying to rebuild their lives. To support themselves and care for their children, Eric and his wife engage in farming on a rented piece of land. Since he was the age of six, Eric has had a right reducible inguinal hernia, a condition that occurs when abdominal tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the lower abdominal muscles, causing a bulge in the groin area. The condition has caused significant discomfort and has affected most of his life. He experiences pain when lying on his stomach or back, making it difficult for him to sleep comfortably. Eric sought treatment at several health facilities, but he was mainly given painkillers, which did not provide lasting relief. Over time, his condition has continued to affect his well-being, and he has become increasingly weak. When Eric heard about a medical outreach organized by the hospital, he went in for examination by the surgical team, who recommended surgery to treat his condition. Fortunately, on August 4th, he will undergo hernia repair surgery at Rwibaale Hospital. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $234 to fund Eric's surgery. Once completed, this procedure will hopefully allow him to live more comfortably and confidently. Eric says, "I hope to be able to bend and do my daily activities after recovery."

Girdhari is a 35-year-old auto-rickshaw driver from India. He lives with his wife, three children, parents, and siblings. He shares a close bond with his parents and siblings and takes pride in contributing to the household through his work as an auto-rickshaw driver. About a year and a half ago, Girdhari sustained severe burn injuries in a workplace accident. While working as a cook, hot oil spilled onto a stove and triggered a sudden fire, leaving his legs badly burned. He was treated at a local hospital, but did not receive the specialized burn care needed for proper healing. Over time, this has led to serious complications — his feet have developed contractures, leaving them tilted and making walking painful and difficult. Girdhari now requires corrective surgery and rehabilitation to restore function and improve his quality of life. With timely medical intervention, he has a strong chance of regaining better mobility and continuing to support his family. Fortunately, on April 23rd, our medical partner, GS Memorial Plastic Surgery Hospital and Trauma Center, will help Girdhari undergo burn contracture release surgery to restore movement and improve his quality of life. Girdhari is receiving support from G.S. Memorial Trust, but needs help raising $726 more to fund their procedure and care. Girdhari said, "After this surgery, I am hopeful to fully recover and regain my mobility. That way, I can feel confident to seek out more job opportunities to support my family."

Helton is a bright and cheerful four-year-old boy from Tanzania. He is the first born child in a family of two children. His parents are humble farmers who cultivate maize as their main source of food and income. Although life in their rural community is modest, the family is close-knit and supportive. Helton spends most of his days at home playing near the family compound. Despite his joyful nature, Helton’s father has long been worried. Helton was diagnosed with wind swept deformity, a condition where his legs bow and appear windswept. Several factors could cause this condition, such as growth disorders, vitamin deficiencies, or excessive fluoride found in contaminated drinking water. As a result, the knees can be angled inwards or outwards, making it difficult to walk and may cause long-term joint damage. The condition makes walking long distances painful and tiring. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $631 to fund treatment for Helton. The procedure is scheduled to take place on October 30th at our medical partner's care center, Kafika House. Treatment will hopefully restore Helton's mobility, allow him to participate in a variety of activities, and greatly decrease his risk of future complications. Helton’s father says, “I wish for my son to live a good, normal life that is not shaped by a condition he developed growing up.”

Annet is a 32-year-old mother of seven children from Uganda. She currently lives with her mother, who is her primary support. She supports herself and her family by selling fish. During childbirth, Annet suffered a laceration. She experienced this during her sixth delivery, resulting in ongoing discomfort. She has been managing this condition for 10 years and sought assistance at various hospitals, but was unable to continue treatment due to financial constraints. This condition has significantly impacted her life, contributing to her separation from her husband. Recently, a health worker advised Annet to seek help at our medical partner's care center, Rwibaale Health Center. There, she was diagnosed with a fourth-degree perineal tear requiring surgical repair. Fortunately, on November 8th, she will undergo hernia repair surgery and our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $201 to fund Annet's surgery. Once completed, this procedure will hopefully allow her to live more comfortably and confidently. Annet says, "I hope to get well and continue my business."

Meet Sokhorn, a recently married 27 year old man, living with his wife in Cambodia. Sokhorn works at a factory that produces automobile and motorcycle plates, and when he has free time, he enjoys swimming, running, and keeping up with current events. In August 2022, when he was on his motorcycle delivering food, Sokhorn was in a collision with a car. He fractured his left tibia, and was operated on at a local hospital. An external fixation device to keep the bones in place was used, and Sokhorn was sent home to heal. Because he lacked the money to do so, Sokhorn never followed up with the doctors who treated him. He now finds that he has no range of motion in his ankle; has lost all sensation in the area where the surgery was performed, and he is unable to walk. He feels so unwell overall, that he no longer goes to work, leaving his wife as their sole support. Fortunately, a neighbor introduced Sokhorn to our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, where he was diagnosed with a chronic infection of his wound, and osteomyelitis, an infection of the bone. Sokhorn needs debridement of the wound and reconstructive surgery, in order to save his leg and to heal completely. Thanks to Children's Surgical Centre, Sokhorn is scheduled for this life changing procedure on October 6th, at Kien Khleang National Rehabilitation Centre. Now he needs your help to fund the $991 required to cover the costs of his surgery and care. Sokhorn said: "I hope the doctors will fix my leg so I have no more infections. I want to find work so I can support my wife and have a good life with her."

Mut is a 67-year-old farmer with one daughter, three sons, and six grandchildren. Mut lives with her husband and does not go to the rice field anymore due to her vision. Instead, she stays home and cares for her grandchildren. She enjoys listening to the monks pray and joining ceremonies at the pagoda. Five years ago, Mut developed a cataract in her left eye causing her sensitivity to light, tearing, and blurry vision. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside. When Mut learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for two hours with her daughter seeking treatment. On June 14th, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her left eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $229 procedure. Mut shared, "I hope I can see well again so I can do housework, cook, and plant vegetables around my home."

Noun is a 68-year-old rice farmer. In her free time, Noun enjoys listening to the monks pray on the radio and visiting the pagoda. Four years ago, Noun developed a cataract in her right eye causing her sensitivity to light, blurry vision, and tearing. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside. When Noun learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for two hours with her neighbor seeking treatment. On June 10th, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her right eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $229 procedure. Noun shared, "after surgery I hope I am able to recognize people well and get around easily enough to plant vegetables around my house to sell for income. I want to visit the pagoda when my vision improves."

Rathana is a 19-year-old taxi driver from Cambodia. He lives with his parents and three younger siblings. His parents are farmers. He usually helps his parents with the farm work, but since he was injured he cannot do that right now. Normally, he enjoys playing soccer with his friends and going out to restaurants. In February, he was in motor accident that caused a fracture in his right femur. His parents took him to a traditional Khmer healer but his bone did not heal properly and he is now unable to walk without severe pain. Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, can help. On July 8th, Rathana will undergo a fracture repair procedure, which will cost $465. This procedure will repair his fracture through the fixation of a nail, allowing him to heal effectively and walk again. Rathana said, "I hope this surgery fixes my fracture quickly so I can work again and help support my parents well."
