Eliseo is a 33-year-old Kaqchikel speaking Mayan man from Guatemala. Eliseo's family has a history of heart disease, many of whom have been treated by our medical partner, Wuqu' Kawoq. Eliseo is experiencing palpitations, dizzy spells, and recurrent chest pain when exercising. Given his family's medical history, Eliseo is at risk for heart disease. He needs specialized cardiac testing to rule out a serious rhythm problem or problem with blood flow to the heart. Juan is a friendly 55-year-old man from Guatemala who is unable to work because his vision is rapidly diminishing. Juan visited Wuqu’ Kawoq, our medical partner in Guatemala, desperate to try and restore his eyesight. Doctors discovered that Juan suffers from an anatomic defect in which his eyelids turn in and scrape across the surface of his eyes. Juan has been living with this condition for many years. He visited many doctors, but couldn't afford care. Finally, because of the pain, he began taking steroids. Unfortunately, the medication worsened his condition and caused him to develop cataracts. For $1500, Juan will not only receive surgery to correct his eyelids and stop the ongoing damage to his eyes, he will also undergo cataract surgery. Chorn is a 56-year-old rice farmer from Cambodia. He has four children and says he enjoys the time he spends with them more than anything else. A condition called avascular necrosis has damaged Chorn’s hips, which makes it difficult to work the long hours necessary to support his family. Watsi friends and fans might recognize Chorn, since Watsi donors funded the replacement of Chorn’s left hip! The procedure for his left hip was a success, and Chorn is ready to undergo the same procedure for his right hip to regain full mobility. $500 is needed to complete the full repair of Chorn’s hips. With our support, Chorn can be more active with his family, and return to working full-time as a rice farmer, free from pain.

Adiana is a courageous and hardworking woman from Haiti who is struggling with breast cancer. She was unable to attend school because of her parents' economic situation, but has made a living for herself and her daughter by starting her own business as a tradeswoman. Adiana emptied her bank account to pay for surgery and a round of chemotherapy, which made a significant dent on her cancer. But now she needs radiation treatment, and she has nothing left. "All I wish is to be definitively cured from this cancer in order to resume my activities," Adiana told our medical partner. "I can’t even cook, because every time I try to lift something I can’t do it because I feel weak and it hurts my muscles from my hands. I do not sleep well. Sometimes I say my life is over." Radiation, which costs $1,500, will reduce her chances of recurrence significantly and put her back on a path toward health. In order to remove the cancer, she will require a thyroidectomy (partial or entire removal of her thyroid). “Right now I am doing fine," Teresiah says, "But the doctors say that a time is coming when I will not be okay. Suwilanji is a shy two-year-old girl from Zambia who has the heart of a fighter. She was born with the dangerous duo of hydrocephalus and spina bifida, but has already won half her battle by overcoming hydrocephalus - a life-threatening condition in which fluid accumulates and causes pressure on the brain. Now, doctors at CURE would like to treat her spina bifida, a birth defect that involves the incomplete development of the spinal cord or its coverings. "Part of her spinal cord is essentially protruding out of her back," they write, "so unless it's fixed, she won't walk and will be susceptible to becoming paralyzed because of the extremely vulnerable state the cord is in." Being their first child, Suwilanji’s parents are anxious to see her get better. $2,000 will get her the spinal surgery she needs to live a normal childhood. This is the last stage in Suwilanji’s medical journey that will allow her to live a disability-free life.

Mebrat is a playful four-year-old girl from Ethiopia. She has Cushing Syndrome, a condition caused by a tumor that results in abnormally high hormone levels, high blood pressure, and deformed body shape due to lack of proportional fat deposition. Our medical partner in Ethiopia marked this case as urgent. They write that Mebrat's condition could lead to dangerous systemic infection if it's not treated immediately. Her tumor will be removed within 24 hours under the assumption that Watsi donors are funding her care. They expect this will completely resolve her condition. Mebrat comes from a poor family. The most her parents could do was to bring her to a district hospital. They hope their child will recover and return to normal, healthy life. "Mebrat is very smart," her father says. "I hope that she will get well and be able to go back to school." For $1,500, we can fund surgery to remove the tumor and allow Mebrat to return to normal life as a playful kid.
