Sovantha is a 36-year-old mechanic from Cambodia. He's been married for 16 years and together they have one son and two daughters, all in school. Sovantha's wife works in a factory. When he is not fixing motors, Sovantha enjoys playing on his phone, listening to music, watching TV, washing clothes, and cooking. He also likes to spend time with his children at home. In May 2020, Sovantha fell 3 meters causing a severe fracture of his left wrist. After the accident he had a pin surgically placed in his wrist to heal the fracture. The bone has healed and the hardware needs to be removed so that he has full functionality and no more risk of infection. Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, can help. On November 18th, Sovantha will undergo a hardware removal procedure, which will cost $230. The pins will be surgically removed to prevent future complications such as pain and infection. Sovantha said, "I hope after the pin is removed my left wrist will feel great and there will be no infection."

Meet Sophal, a 47-year-old man from Cambodia. He lives with his wife and three children in a province not far from the capital, and works hard on a farm. Sophal is completely blind in his right eye due to a mature cataract, and is finding day-to-day activities and farm work to be difficult. For only $100, Sophal will receive a surgery on his right eye to improve his eyesight and help prevent permanent blindness. When Borin was two years old, he burned his foot in an accident and his family was unable to afford treatment. Although the burn healed on its own, Borin has had a large contracture scar ever since. Borin's contracture scar is an area of tight skin on his foot and toes that makes it difficult for him to walk. Borin is also embarrassed by the look of the scar and tries to hide it when possible. “He wants to be able to walk properly again and feel less shy about showing his foot,” our medical partners at Children’s Surgical Centre say. A student in grade 12, “he likes reading science books the most." For $300, Borin will undergo a corrective surgery and skin graft to release and repair his contracture scar. Sophea is 23 and studies business at a university in Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia. In his free time, Sophea enjoys doing aerobics, but he often has difficulty breathing due to his nasal polyps. Our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, writes, “Sophea developed perpetual headaches and a runny nose four years ago. He has difficulty breathing and chronic sinus infections. He needs a simple surgery to remove two growths in his nose in order to breathe easier and clear infections.” Since he is paying for school, Sophea cannot afford the treatment he needs. For $225, we can fund Sophea's bilateral polyptomy, a surgery that will remove the growths in his nose, which will allow him to breathe normally, prevent further infections and improve his quality of life.

Ingrid is a 30-year-old woman who lives in one of Guatemala's southern coffee growing communities. For the last six months, she has been living with a cyst just under the skin of her scalp. The cyst has been growing rapidly, and is now causing severe pain from the tension on the skin. She is also experiencing frequent bleeding from irritation of the skin over the cyst. When Pheak was 17 years old, he was near his home on the Vietnam border when a landmine exploded and injured his right leg. Pheak's wounds were not treated properly, so he has spent most of his life in pain and unable to walk on his own. To make matters more complicated, Pheak now has a severe bone infection that requires a below-the-knee amputation to treat. After this surgery, Pheak can be fitted with a prosthetic to enable him to walk. For $225, we can help Pheak receive the surgery and prosthetic he needs to finally live a fully mobile life.
