Joseph is resilient. Both of his parents died when he was young. He lived with his uncle for a few years, but was chased away because of his poor health. After leaving his uncle’s care, with nowhere to go, Joseph lived on the streets until a social worker arranged for his care at an orphanage. Now, Joseph has a Kaposi's sarcoma, a cancerous tumor of the connective tissue, on his foot. The tumor makes it difficult and painful for him to walk, and risks serious complications if the cancer spreads. "I dream of becoming either a doctor or an engineer," Joseph, who is currently in secondary school studying science, shares. "If God will bless me financially, I will give back to the orphanage that has been taking care of me with great love." Although the orphanage is fully supportive of Joseph’s education, there are not enough funds to provide for his medical needs. For $800 we can pay for Joseph to undergo a below-knee amputation and receive a prosthesis so he can still walk. Meet John, a 10-year-old from Haiti. A CT scan recently revealed that John is living with hydrocephalus, or "water on the brain," a dangerous condition in which fluid accumulates in the skull and causes swelling. John's father says that his son cannot control his body anymore, he cannot sit, and he sometimes experiences, fever, headaches and vomiting. "John works well at school and he loves to play with his friends," our medical partner writes. "His father is a bricklayer and has two kids to take care of. He loves doing business, but he doesn't have the means to launch his own, so he is doing only small jobs whenever he finds them. He doesn't have money to pay for the treatment his son requires." For $1260, we can fund surgery to drain fluid from John's brain and help him live a healthy life.

Meet 12-year-old Felista. She is studying in primary school but her schooling has often been interrupted and progress has been difficult because Felista has hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus is a condition that causes enlarged head size, intra cranial pressure, and "sun-setting" eyes. To escape brain damage, blindness, or even premature death, Felista needs surgery, but her parents are unable to raise the funds. The fourth born in a family of six children, Felista lives in Kenya with her parents and siblings. Felista’s father is a hawker in a nearby trading center, while her mother does small scale farming on their parent’s small land, both jobs bring in very little income. “It has been so difficult for me as a mother to bring up Felista and seeing her condition progress over time. I pray she gets treatment soon and that she lives a healthier life,” says Felista’s mother. For $980, we can give Felista a shunt incision. Juvensio is an energetic one-year-old who lives with his mother in Zambia. He was born with spina bifida, a dangerous condition which leaves the spine protruding in a fluid filled sack on his back, which makes Juvensio susceptible to infection and spinal cord damage. Bernadette, Juvensio's mom, is certain that her baby boy is going to be a great man some day. Even when family and friends suggested she abandon Juvensio, Bernadette stood up to them. The benefits of addressing Juvensio's condition are promising, he would be less susceptible to infection, spinal damage, and no longer be at risk of fatality. Wilna has not been going to school because of her cleft lip. She says she is scared because she is often laughed at. Meet Sochea, a 26-year-old woman from Cambodia! Sochea works in a garment factory to support herself. When she isn't working, she likes to read books and listen to music. Meet 10-year-old Pelensky from Haiti. When Pelensky isn't out playing soccer and basketball with his friends, he’s designing with Legos and drawing detailed floor plans as he pursues his dreams of becoming an architect. Several years ago, on a rainy day, Pelensky was hit by a truck. The truck passed over his abdomen, causing major injuries which affected his ability to urinate. Pelensky has undergone several surgeries to repair the damage to his lower abdomen. Currently Pelensky has a urostomy bag and is excited receive his third and final surgery to finish the repair and reconstruction of his bladder and urinary tract. “Ever since the accident, we have had to spend all of our time and money on Pelensky’s healthcare. We haven’t been able to take care of the rest of our family. We are excited that we will not have to keep worrying about this,” says Pelensky’s father. For $1,500 we can support doctors as they perform a surgical reconstruction of Pelensky’s bladder and urinary tract. This will allow Pelensky to live a normal life with full urinary function and no limitations on or off the court.

Meet Brian, a 12-year-old boy from Guatemala. He is a hard worker who previously enjoyed going to school, where he was a high performing student. Brian was recently diagnosed with a seizure disorder that severely limits his ability to participate in daily activities. He is confined to his home, unable to attend school and socialize with friends. Brian’s family is frightened, but hopeful that Watsi donors can help him access medical care to restore his health.
