Srey is a bright 12-year old girl who loves to play hopscotch. She lives with her parents and siblings in a remote area of Cambodia. Srey’s dream is to finish school so she can become a nurse. Srey was born with cataracts in both eyes and has lost 70% of her vision. This makes it hard for Srey to do daily tasks and to keep up with her school work. Her vision loss has set her back in school and at 12-years old is currently only in the third grade. Srey’s parents were scared to seek treatment for her cataracts because they didn’t know how they would afford it. To get Srey’s vision back she will need cataract surgery on both of her eyes, which costs $250 dollars. Help Srey see clearly again and give her the chance to realize her dreams of becoming a nurse.

Six year old Choolwe comes from a loving family. His parents' lives are on hold at the moment, however, because Choolwe has hydrocephalus, a disorder that causes increased cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. Choolwe's head has grown to such a large size due to the fluid buildup that he cannot function normally. Recently, he lost the ability to speak. If left untreated, hydrocephalus can be fatal. We are raising $1750 for Choolwe to have "shunt" surgery to drain the fluid from his brain. Choolwe's father is staying with him in the children's ward - trusting that he can take his son home soon with his mobility, speech and hearing returned.

Aminata is a beautiful, spirited woman from Mali, living with her husband in the capital city of Bamako. Aminata suffered a stroke five years ago and has made almost a full recovery. Unfortunately, she has also been experiencing painfully abnormal gynecological hemorrhaging resulting from a uterine fibroid (benign muscular tumor). Upon consulting with her physician, it was determined that her only option is to have a procedural hysterectomy. Aminata works alongside her husband. They make ends meet by selling grains in the local market. Financial constraints have left Aminata unable to afford this expensive procedure on her own. Project Muso, a Mali-based organization, is seeking $660 to fund Aminata’s surgery. In her spare time, Aminata enjoys singing and playing the calabasse. Upon successful treatment, Aminata hopes to "reignite the joy in her home."

Moe Moe is a 15-year old girl who is deeply dedicated to her family. She has a large mass on her neck that her doctors say could become "very dangerous" if she doesn't have immediate surgery to remove it. Moe Moe left school when she was in the second grade to help support her family. Her parents work as day laborers, earning less than 3 dollars a day. While she helps her family around the house, Moe Moe is now unable to work because of concerns regarding her medical condition. Burma Border Projects is requesting $2,000 to fund an operation to remove the mass on Moe Moe's neck. With proper treatment, Moe Moe will be able to help support her family and live the healthy life every teenage girl deserves!

Four year old Rose is one of the youngest of nine children! She has bilateral "genus varus" or bowleggedness. Due to this condition, she experiences severe knee pain and is unable to run or walk normally. Though Rose loves to play with other children, her problems with her joints make it more difficult for her to join in physical activities. Her parents cannot afford the cost of surgery themselves, due to their large family. In order to correct this condition, we are donating $500 towards surgery and the application of long leg casts to Rose's legs. After surgery, her providers expect that Rose will be able to walk normally and will avoid experiencing premature osteoarthritis.

Brian is a cheery little boy who loves cars. In fact, he has already declared his plans to become a driver. Brian's father is no longer involved with the family, so his mother supports him and his four siblings by selling fruit at the local market. Brian was born with cervical hygroma, a malformation of the lymphatic system that causes a mass to form on the neck. If it's not treated soon, the mass could cause difficulty in breathing and swallowing. Doctors at Kijabe Hospital can remove Brian's mass through surgery. Brian's mother works hard, but she barely earns enough to support her young family, let alone pay for the specialty medical care her son needs. Let's help her cover the cost of Brian's care so she can rest assured that Brian is not at risk for serious complications.

Tha Zin is a nine-year-old girl from Burma, the setting of the world's longest-running civil war. Tha Zin was diagnosed with an orbital pseudotumor when she was six. Her parents took her to Yangon, the former capital of Burma, for surgery. Unfortunately, something went wrong in surgery, and afterwards Tha Zin's eye was even more swollen than before. For the next two years, Tha Zin's parents went into debt traveling to the capital every two weeks to get medication to manage their daughter's condition. Her eye has still not improved, and she's missed a year of school as a result. Quality medical care is scarce in Burma, but Burma Border Projects' partner, Burma Children Medical Fund, can facilitate Tha Zin's care in Thailand. It will cost $1500 to coordinate Tha Zin's surgery, which will either restore function to her eye, or remove it and enable her to continue with school. BCMF writes, "When we ask Tha Zin what she wants when she is older, she is very shy and does not say anything. However, later she comes up to a staff member and tells him that she would like to be a doctor." Let's help make that possible!

Ventura needs to be fitted with two prosthetic devices. Several years ago, Ventura was in a severe electrical accident that resulted in the loss of his arms. Since his residual limbs are small, Ventura has had a hard time finding a prosthetic that will fit. It will cost $1,490 to fit and manufacture new arms for Ventura, which will greatly improve his independence and the functionality arms. Ventura, 39, is an amazingly positive man. He is all smiles and enthusiasm as he grasps the doctor’s hands with his two residual limbs in a firm and warm greeting. He is excited for the opportunity to be fitted for his first prosthetic device and is thankful for the funding provided by Watsi.

Shoom Yee suffered a serious burn when, at the age of 2 ½, she accidently fell and tipped a pot of boiling water on her right arm. From their home in Burma, the closest clinic was 30 miles away; Shoom Yee’s parents walked for three days to get help. At the clinic they were only given medicine and cream to dress the wounds. Now 8 years old, her injury has since caused long-term functional impairment. A keloid scar, an excess growth of scar tissue, formed between her upper arm and forearm. This has limited her range of motion. Shoom Yee finds it hard to fully participate in school without the use of her dominant arm and is sometimes teased by other students. Shoom Yee’s family moved to Mae Sot, Thailand to seek better care for their daughter and found it. Burma Children Medical Fund can help Shoom Yee regain the functionality of her arm with surgery, skin grafts and physiotherapy. A team member at BCMF wrote, Soom Yee’s “parents both wish for the very best for their daughter, wanting her to grow healthily and happily with the confidence in herself to be able to pursue whatever she wishes, without being confined by her physical mobility.” This surgery is the first step in helping Shoom Yee achieve all this and more.

Mariam is a sweet 6 year-old girl suffering from a bone infection in her upper arm. Osteomyelitis is painful and causes stiffness of the joint and affected area. Mariam has been suffering from osteomyelitis of the upper arm for 4 months. Before getting sick, Mariam loved playing with her younger brother and sister. She would often help her mom around the house while her father worked the farm. Her father grows corn, beans and teff (the grain that is used to make injera, the traditional Ethiopian bread). Africa Mission Healthcare Foundation can treat Mariam’s condition. The surgery is expected to give Mariam function of her arm again. Mariam is looking forward to starting school next year, lets help her get there by giving her full-use of her arm again.

Elizabeth is an adorable little girl whose efforts at starting to walk have been put on hold by bilateral clubfoot, a foot deformity which makes it impossible for her to stand. Elizabeth's condition is treatable with surgery, but her parents are farmers. They work hard to cover the cost of her and her siblings' school fees, but they can't afford the $500 procedure Elizabeth needs to walk normally. AMHF tells us that Elizabeth's parents are very concerned about their daughter's future. "Elizabeth's mother is praying for her foot deformity to be corrected" so she can "grow like her other children."

Tseganesh has a large abdominal mass that's putting dangerous pressure on her internal organs and threatening to turn into a critical condition if it bleeds or becomes infected. Tseganesh is the oldest of three children. She loves school, but often asks her parents if she can stay home because her classmates "make fun of her tummy." Her father, who is a farmer, worries about her future. "She is my first born. Many members of my family are expecting her to be successful in her education and help the rest of the family, but if this problem continues, I am very skeptical that this will be so." The surgery Tseganesh needs costs $1000. Her doctors expect it to give her a chance at a normal, productive life.
