Jacenta is a 69-year-old hard-working farmer from Uganda. She and her husband grow beans, millet, yams, and sorghum. They live with the youngest of their eight children.
Jacenta enjoys moments when she is in the garden with her husband helping her. In her free time she enjoys weaving baskets and going to church, where she is a parish leader.
For the past seven years, Jacenta has suffered from a hernia, a condition in which intestinal tissue protrudes through a weakened area in the abdominal wall. The pain she experiences has prevented her from doing her daily work.
When Jacenta's hernia first developed, people told her that it was just pain that would go away on its own. When the pain did not subside, she attempted to use herbs to treat herself. However, the herbs did not help, and now the hernia is larger and very painful.
Jacenta requires hernia repair surgery, during which doctors will return the herniated tissue to the abdominal cavity and seal the weakness in the abdominal wall. With her small income, she cannot afford the $208 treatment. She has used all of her earnings to pay tuition for her daughter, who recently completed a nursing course and has not yet found a job. Jacenta has, however, contributed $8 toward the cost of her surgery.
After surgery, Jacenta is looking forward to growing food to support her family. Now that her last daughter has finished school, she will save the money that comes from the surplus produce to invest.
"I pray that God blesses you for supporting me, and that His blessings overflow so that other people too can be helped," says Jacenta. "I also hope to continue supporting the need in my community."
