Chillion is a seven-year-old boy, and the second-born child in his family. Chillion’s mother is the family’s sole care-giver, who relies on casual work on her neighbors’ farms to support her two children.
For more than four years, Chillion has had a reducible inguinal hernia, a condition that occurs when abdominal tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the lower abdominal muscles, causing a bulge in the groin area. His mother reports that she first noticed a swelling in his groin area about three years ago. Initially, she did not seek medical attention because she hoped it would resolve on its own. However, she later noticed that the swelling was increasing in size and became more prominent whenever Chillion coughed or cried. Concerned about his worsening condition, she took him to the nearest hospital, where a scan confirmed the diagnosis.
Chillion and his mother were referred to our medical partner’s care center, Nazareth Hospital. Upon learning about the cost of the surgery, his mother was worried, because she could not afford the required amount. Without treatment, Chillion’s condition may worsen and potentially lead to complications such as infection or strangulation.
Fortunately, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is helping Chillion receive treatment. On August 6th, he will undergo hernia repair surgery to treat his condition, and prevent future medical complications. Now, Chillion’s family needs help to fund this $517 procedure.
