Lucia is a three-year-old girl from Tanzania. She is the youngest of three children. Her family lives in a remote village called Mwangundo, in the Meatu district. Her father works as a fisherman, earning just enough to cover daily expenses.
Lucia was diagnosed with bilateral genu varus, where her legs bow outwards. Several factors could cause this condition, such as growth disorders, vitamin deficiencies, or excessive fluoride found in contaminated drinking water. As a result, the knees can be angled inwards or outwards, making it difficult to walk and may cause long-term joint damage. She quickly becomes fatigued and experiences pain when trying to walk.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $810 to fund treatment for Lucia. She will undergo an osteotomy procedure on October 23rd at our medical partner’s care center, Kafika House. This will hopefully restore Lucia’s mobility, allow her to participate in a variety of activities, and greatly decrease her risk of future complications.
Lucia’s mother says: “I feel like my daughter will have a hard time growing up if this condition is left untreated, but all I wish for her is a good life.”
