Pitou is a 12-year-old student from Cambodia. He lives with his parents and two younger siblings in Phnom Penh province. His parents are grocery sellers. Pitou is currently in grade eight. He enjoys biology, and he would like to be a doctor when he grows up. During his free time, he enjoys reading books, playing games, and playing soccer with friends. His favorite meal is his mother’s pork fried rice.
About two years ago, Pitou started having weakness in his feet, ankles, and legs. He has difficulty using his ankle muscles to lift up his foot, and has experienced muscle wasting in both of his legs and a lack of sensation. Doctors have tentatively diagnosed him with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy. A complex reconstruction procedure is necessary for both legs to help manage the progression of the disease. He needs to undergo a tendon and nerve repair procedure to help regain strength and mobility.
Our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, is helping Pitou receive treatment. He is scheduled to undergo the tendon and nerve repair procedure on December 2nd. This procedure will cost $701, and Pitou and his family need your support.
Pitou shared “After the surgery, I hope that I will no longer have difficulty with walking, so I can go to school by myself and play my favorite sport.”
