Thiago, who is one month old, lives in Bolivia with his parents. Thiago is considered to be a miracle baby, as his mother suffered several miscarriages before giving birth to him. She is an auxiliary teacher, while his father works providing maintenance for electric services.
Thiago was born with a cardiac condition, known as total anomalous pulmonary venous return. As a result of this condition, Thiago’s pulmonary veins are connected to an abnormal location in his heart. Oxygen-poor blood is circulated throughout Thiago’s body, instead of being passed to his lungs. As a result, blood flowing to the body doesn’t have enough oxygen.
On June 18th, Thiago will undergo cardiac surgery at our medical partner’s care center, Hospital del Niño Dr. Ovidio Aliaga Uría. During this procedure, surgeons will reattach the vessels to the heart at the normal location, so that blood can flow normally through Thiago’s heart and body.
Thiago’s family needs help to fund the costs of his surgery and cardiac care. Our medical partner, International Cardiac Alliance, is requesting $1,500 to cover the cost of cardiac exams and diagnostics, surgical costs, follow-up care, and medications.
Thiago’s mother said: “I had a dream before having my baby. I dreamt that he will need help to be healthy, and I’m grateful to the doctors and nurses who are helping my baby right now.”
