Christine is a 27-year-old single mother of one from Kenya. Before she was involved in an accident, Christine relied on her small vegetable kiosk to support herself and her son.
Christine was travelling to look for work in the hope of building a better life for herself and her son. Instead, her journey took a devastating turn when she was involved in a tragic accident along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway. The accident claimed three lives and left several others with serious injuries. Christine was among those who were rushed to AIC Kijabe Hospital for emergency care. When she regained consciousness, she was in severe pain and had sustained injuries to her face and lungs. She was also unable to walk. Doctors stabilised her condition and began the long process of helping her recover. Her national health insurance has been exhausted after two surgeries, but she still requires another fracture repair surgery, an important step toward restoring her mobility. For Christine, recovery is about more than being able to walk again. She is deeply worried about her young son, who is currently being cared for by a neighbor back home. With no parents or siblings to turn to, Christine has very little support. As the family’s only breadwinner, she worries about what will happen if she cannot walk and return to work. The uncertainty of being unable to care for her child has left her emotionally distressed.
Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner can help. On September 3rd, Christine will undergo a fracture repair procedure, called an open reduction and internal fixation. With the right treatment, she can regain her mobility, return home to her son, and have a chance to rebuild the life she was working so hard to create. Now, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $1,500 to fund this procedure.
Worriedly, Christine says: “My son keeps asking when I am coming home. I pray I get better soon so I can return to him and be there for him.”
