Brylin is a-two-month-old baby boy from Kenya. He was diagnosed with spina bifida at birth. The news came as a devastating shock to his mother who had never heard of the condition before. Confused and overwhelmed, she struggled to understand what was happening to her baby and what the future might hold for him. Brylin’s mother is a single mom, whose own mother remains by her side to support her daughter and her grandson.
At just one month old, Brylin underwent his first spina bifida closure surgery. After being discharged, however, his mother noticed that he was increasingly uncomfortable and observed something alarming about his head. Concerned, she rushed him back to a medical facility, where Brylin was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a condition in which excess cerebrospinal fluid accumulates in the brain and increases intracranial pressure. As a result of his condition, Brylin has been experiencing frequent crying, sometimes struggles to feed, and frequently suffers from fevers and colds. A previous surgery to treat hydrocephalus was done a month ago ago, however, the shunt has failed and needs to be replaced.Without treatment, Brylin will experience severe physical and developmental delays.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $574 to cover the cost of surgery for Brylin. The procedure is scheduled to take place on December 17th and will drain the excess fluid from Brylin’s brain. This will reduce intracranial pressure and greatly improve his quality of life.
“I am unemployed, and we have no income, but I still believe my son deserves a chance to live. All I ask for is help so he can get the surgery he needs” shares Brylin’s mother.
