Mycko is an eight-year-old boy. He lives with his mother, father, and three sisters in a port city in southern Haiti. His father is a farmer and a construction worker, while his mother takes care of the children and the household. Mycko is in the second grade, and he enjoys going to school.
Mycko was born with a cardiac condition called Tetralogy of Fallot, a series of related birth defects. There is a hole between two chambers of his heart and a muscular blockage in one of his heart valves. Oxygen does not circulate fully through his body, causing weakness and shortness of breath.
Mycko flew to the Cayman Islands to receive treatment. On December 9, he underwent cardiac surgery to treat his condition. This $12,000 surgery was subsidized by Have a Heart Cayman Islands. Mycko’s family also needs help to fund the costs of surgery prep. The $1,500 bill covers labs, medicines, checkup and followup appointments. It also supports passport obtainment and the social workers from our medical partner, Haiti Cardiac Alliance, who accompanied Mycko’s family overseas.
“We knew Mycko had a heart problem since the time he was born,” says his father, “but we always thought there was nothing anyone could do to fix it. We thank God for this chance!”
