Bernice is a 45-year-old woman from Kenya. Her husband is a construction worker and together, they support their three children. Before her accident, Bernice worked as a domestic worker.
In November 2024, Bernice had just finished running errands and was on her way home on a motorbike when she was involved in an accident near her house. It was raining and the motorbike slid, causing Bernice and the rider to fall. Bernice injured her lower left leg badly. Worried about the costs of going to a hospital, she tried to treat the injury at home using hot water and salt to wash and massage her leg. Unfortunately, this treatment did not help, and her condition worsened. After a week of enduring the pain, Bernice gathered some money and visited our medical partner’s care center, AIC Kijabe Hospital. Scans revealed that she had broken bones in her leg and would need surgery to heal correctly. Bernice has been in constant pain, unable to walk, sleep properly, or take care of her daily needs due to the pain.
On December 9th, Bernice will undergo a fracture repair procedure called an open reduction and internal fixation. This procedure will help her find relief from her suffering and regain her ability to care for her family. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $1,094 to fund this procedure.
Bernice says, “I haven’t been able to sleep well for the past month. My leg feels heavy, and the pain is constant.”
